ULOG DAY 34: "HOW LIVING THINGS ARE NAMED"

in #ulog6 years ago

Unlike us, the Scientists usually name the living things differently into strange words. Why do they do this? Does it mean that they imply they are smarter than us? The fact is, no. They use the strange and hard words to make them understand it more.

We sometimes question, 'Why can't they just use the common name we call for such a thing?' Why can't they just call a cat into a cat and a bird into a bird? Certainly, Scientists can speak English but not all the people in the world use this universal language. Moreover, there are animals that are different but almost look the same. From the diverse parts of the earth, plants and animals have the same name and if we visit from one country to another, the name they use for the species is different. There are also living things from many countries that are named the same.

Now we know why do the scientists named things differently.

Carolus Linnaeus System

People who know several dialects can also use other words. In the primitive period during Julius presence in Rome, he named his pet a canis. This Latin word means dog, but Scientists named it as Canis familiaris or dog mastered. Both words belong to the system to know this living thing easily. It comes from the idea of a Swiss gentleman Carl von Linne but his Latin name is Carolus Linnaeus. To disseminate this information around the world, Carl wrote a book entitled Systema Naturae or The System of Nature in English. It defines the system's functions:

Living things can be both plants and animals. It is fine if we say that many of them fit in animal kingdom or plant kingdom.

Phyla is is the name of the kingdoms separated into groups. The phylum is its singular form.

Every phylum is separated into different classes.
Every class is orderly divided.
Every family is separated into genera. Genus is its singular form.
Every genus is separated into species.

If we have a dog, it belongs to the animal kingdom of phylum Chordata, the species with backbones. Mammals that suck milk relates to Mammalia or mammals. Mammals who eat meat belongs to Carnivora. Hunting animals such as foxes and wolves belong to Canidae. Our dogs belong to Canis and to the familiar species that stands for obedient.

These techniques are the easy ways to know millions of types of life on our planet. Since the period of Linnaeus, there was much progress of the system, but the recent biologists added the third kingdom which they name protists that are further plants and animals. This type of kingdom is the tiniest organisms that are grouped together which we can't see easily whether they are plants or animals.

There were still thousands and undiscovered species that Linnaeus never knew that was newly discovered by the scientists and named according to his system. There were 1,600,000 classified species and the undiscovered will be named forthwith.
