Is the UFC Brand Shrinking ?

UFC 224 Lowest PPV Buys in Last 10 Years

<

UFC 224 is reported to have sold only 85,000 in PPV buys. Which makes it the lowest selling UFC PPV in the last 10 years. UFC 215 didn't turn out much better with selling around 100,000 PPV buys.

This brings up the question, has UFC peaked or is the UFC name brand not as strong as it once was ?

Let's take a look at the last 10 PPV sales listed on mmapayout.com.

( 03/04/2017 ) UFC 209 -- Woodley v Thompson Il -- 300,000
( 04/08/2017 ) UFC 210 -- Cormier v Johnson II ------ 300,000
( 05/13/2017 ) UFC 211 -- Miocic v JDS II --------------- 300,000
( 06/03/2017 ) UFC 212 -- Aldo v Holloway ------------ 167,000
( 07/08/2017 ) UFC 213 -- Romero v Whittaker ------- 150,000
( 07/29/2017 ) UFC 214 -- Cormier v Jones II ---------- 850,000
( 09/09/2017 ) UFC 215 -- Nunes v Shevchenko II ---- 100,000
( 10/07/2017 ) UFC 216 -- Ferguson v Lee -------------- 120,000
( 11/04/2017 ) UFC 217 -- Bisping v GSP ---------------- 875,000
( 12/02/2017) UFC 218 -- Holloway v Aldo II ----------- 230,000

It looks like without a key top draw like GSP / Jones / Ronda or Conor most the PPV sales are mediocre at best with events headlined by WMMA ( other then Ronda ) being the worst selling. Which also brings up another question ... Is WMMA a failed experiment of UFC ? Should it be allowed to headline a PPV event ?

Sure the woman we are seeing are top athletes in WMMA that are competing in these events but UFC is not a sport, it's a business that is the premier home of the sport of MMA. So if it don't make dollars it don't make cents ( sense ).

Another possibility could be that Bellator is simply taking away a share of the viewers and fans are opting in to watching Free MMA with Bellator other then paying $60 + for PPV with the UFC.

It's banned in France due to the fact that it's extremely violent and fights can result in death.

France will come around eventually and host some UFC events. Lots of sports can result in death. There is a total of 5 deaths in sanctioned MMA bouts and 0 of them occurred in the UFC. That is allot less then in other contact sports.

Not the biggest fan of UFC myself. Watching second rate fighters beat eachother up while hockey and basketball playoffs are on definitely isn't going to happen. There's too much UFC matches and the hype just isn't there. The sport needs more weight to it.

I agree that there is too much UFC events being produced. Which in turn causes watered down cards and low PPV buys. I don't agree that they are second rate fighters. UFC is the home of some of the best fighters in the world who have a multitude of different skill sets as apposed to someone who focuses on one specific art.

By second rate I don't mean they're not skilled, it's that there are too many weight classes and fights. They need to broadcast less, and only the best fightcards so it becomes more special. I only watch the must see fights live.

Sorry for misunderstanding. I agree too many cards. The weight class situation likely gets worse before it gets better. Meaning ... UFC likely adds more weight classes in the near future. If the new rumored TV deal UFC has inked is true .... there will be less PPV events in the future which hopefully means more stacked cards.

I don't watch much UFC but I expect the economics will be like boxing has been historically. All about the match ups and personalities. The core will always be there watching, to get the big draws they need BIG personalities.

UFC was the number 1 org. for the longest time and bought out any competitor that came slightly close to threatening that reality. Recently a Viacom owned competitor( Bellator ) has since emerged as the clear number 2 org and are poaching the odd talent here in there while also giving past legends a place to perform. Some of the core fan base may have started watching Bellator more and UFC a little less. Causing a drop in UFC viewership.

I think UFC will have its hard core fans that pay the premium price for most of the events. Floating viewers that are looking for quality sport/entertainment are going to only pick the highly publicised top fighters.

An example of this is my UFC viewing habits. To be fair it's not a sport I watch regularly. I tuned in to the Connor McGregor fights as they were publicised and hyped up by the press. Other than that I watch some bouts with my Brother when he recommends a fighter like Bisping.

Like boxing, I think it's a triangle of factors that impact the viewing. Quality and personality of the fighter, the hype and press coverage and finally the cost of the PPV. They all work in conjunction with each other on too often the price takes over the decision from the other two.

I agree with some of the other comments about reducing events and adding quality. Keeping the price reasonable would help it grow to a bigger audience too, but that won't happen.

Cheers, Gaz

All good points.

The price of the PPV is a little to high IMO. The PPV's get shown in some areas for free while other countries like USA / Canada are stuck paying a premium price.

Thanks for your comment.

I'm not sure that revenue is shrinking, I would imagine it's growing. The PPV numbers for 224 suck tho, and I woulod attribute this to the lack of hype behind the headliners.. Nunes seems pretty private and generally not accessible, and Pennington has been out of action for a long time.

They have more events than ever, which can mean a weaker product but they cold still be selling more overall just on sheer number of events happening.. Also this time of year can be tough I would imagine with hockey and basketball playoffs happening simultaneously.. End of summer seems like a good time as there's less competition for eyeballs..

I think revenue wise they may be growing. They have added T.V. deals , more events + fight pass but I am more thinking about the Name UFC itself. It seems like not that long ago that any PPV that had the name UFC attached to it was gntd to hit 100K based on the UFC name being attached to it. It seems like the abundance of cards and lack of new stars plus Bellator giving a home to past stars ( and new ) may have swayed some viewers away from UFC or at least have viewers more cautious on what UFC events to buy.

Bellator only PPV event is reported to have done 100 K and basically was deemed a failure. They haven't done one since.

Guess well have to see how 225 and 226 do. If the summer PPV's are weak then you might be on to something!

You clearly have not read our user guide and our zero-tolerance policy for plagiarism. Monetizing off of someone elses creative work without citing your source is plagiarism.
This is your final warning, if we receive another article like this from you, you will be blacklisted and all funds sent to this service will not be refunded.

This content wasn't stolen. I however did forget to source the picture which wasn't from the link you provided. You are more then welcome to keep the change I used to order your service with as Its the last you will receive from me. I will also be sure to inform others to not use your service as well.

If you are running a " Police " account then make sure you are doing it correctly instead of doing a half ass job at it.

Let me break this down for you.

You did not source your content that was not yours and you are profiting from it without giving it credit.

It is also apparent that you failed to read our user guide for our service before submitting your post to us. We do not pay for plagiarism, it's a rather simple concept.

We have built a strong community on quality content from people who believe in giving credit where credit is due. If you want to be butt hurt about that then maybe don't do a "half ass job" on your posts.

Let me break this down for you. The content is mine. The picture I forgot to source ( which I corrected ) and which YOU gave credit to the wrong source.

You need to do a better job at trying to be a " hall monitor ".

Show me the exact article that I stole from. Everything in my article was written directly by me. The information about PPV buys is backed by a source.

In short : Your service sucks.

Its not but-hurt .. it's fact. Not because you flag plagiarism but because you lack the knowledge to fact check. You also go against your own rules of " giving credit where its due " with your incorrect sourcing.

So many issues with this dialog, but lets clarify this a bit. Forgive the typos my phone is cracked, been a fun day today.

First off thank you for correcting the source issue, that shouldve killed this duscussion as that was the original issue.
The source link is incorrect, which has to do with the wrong link being applied after reverse image source and technically an error on our end.
The reason i created this service (which has more than one curator by the way) is to combat pkagerized and stolen content to make money while original content gets shit on, which hurts the entire platform and contributes to the less than 10% retention and engagement rate.
I have invesigated your profile and see that you do a lot of curation and upvote services to reward users and keep them engaged, as to I with over a dozen active projects here.
Instead of getting into a pissing contest with my curatir and yourself, lets put the dicks away and realize we have the same mission here. We run one if the most popular and used curation service here and expect more now that bumper is shutting down. You run contests and rewards and pride yourself on contributing here, pretty sure after a few beers wed probably brainstorm 10 different ways we could partner up and improve this platform 10 times over. If inclined, contact me vua discord @entrepreneur916#4645.

We are all better than this dumbshit right here.

Without getting too further into this. I am all for stopping plagiarism and INFORMING and then warning someone of sourcing rules / issues.

I was not only accused of not sourcing the image but stolen content as well by @thundercurator in the original response. Those are some strong words to place on someones blog. Its like my articles content wasn't even compared to the source @thundercurator was claiming I was stealing.

That being said. Mistakes happen and this whole conversation could of been avoided if the original message was a little more friendly.

Thanks for the offer to work together and the projects you do to make Steemit a better place.

Agreed on all fronts. This particular situation has never happened before. Our succes rate is extremely high at catching these issues.

I will take full responsibility of @thundercuators actions. It is my service that I created.

And you are correct, as a content creator those are strong words of accusation. I extend my apologizes to you personally and hope we can bury this and continue whatever cooperation we have moving forward.

Apology accepted and issue buried.

@thundercuators also gave me a flag / downvote. I feel as it should be removed.

According to ONE Championships, they are spanking UFC in the Asia Market, maybe that has some impact?

Thanks for that tidbit of information. I was unaware of that. It certainly can't be helping UFC any.
