The hackers gained control over the profiles of the UK distributor Pathe UK, Matalan department store and the American publishing house Pantheon Books and several other pages. On all hacked accounts there was a blue check mark - a sign of a verified account on Twitter.
Next, the fraudsters put the name of the head of Tesla and his photos into profiles and posted messages about the campaign for the distribution of cryptocurrency. To participate in it, users were asked to transfer a small amount of bitcoins to the specified account. Many have gone on about the fraudsters because the profile has been verified. At the moment, the fraudulent messages have been removed, and the organizations' profiles have been restored, the BBC said.
Hackers are not the first time luring Bitcoins on Twitter on behalf of Ilona Mask. So, in March of this year, unknown people created account and in the comments under the posts of this Ilon Mask asked users to send from 0.6 to five units of cryptocurrency ether (Ethereum), promising ten times more.
At the end of October, Musk posted a comic message on his page with a similar offer, for which he was temporarily blocked by the Twitter administration.
