Netflix Rebooting Unsolved Mysteries Television Show

in #tv5 years ago (edited)

Anyone that is old enough to remember the original Unsolved Mysteries television show can tell you, it was one of the best variety shows available at the time. The most chilling part about the show was, the stories were supposed to be based on real events and real mysteries. Unsolved Mysteries originally began airing in 1988 with Robert Stack hosting the show. Over the years the show moved networks, changed hosts, and was sold to new owners. Now Netflix has thrown their hat in the ring to bring the show to their platform.

While Unsolved Mysteries did not air new episodes consecutively since 1988, it has been re-run in some form for most of those decades. What is great about Unsolved Mysteries is that the current owners, Cosgrove-Meurer Productions, maintain a website for fans to keep up to date on cold cases that were aired, even letting fans submit tips if they have them. FilmRise picked up worldwide digital distribution rights in 2017 and has keep the show alive on Amazon Prime and Tubi TV (free app available on Roku and other streaming platforms, advertising supported) and more recently Hulu.

Mid-January 2019 Netflix made their intentions to revive the show with new episodes, via reboot, clear. Considering Netflix has the looming loss of Marvel/Disney content they need to expand their private library more now than ever. Picking up nostalgia shows such as Unsolved Mysteries, if handled correctly, could help keep subscribers happy and paying.

The Netflix reboot will feature 12 episodes, is being handled by Stranger Things executive producer Shawn Levy via his company 21 Laps Entertainment in connection with Cosgrove-Meurer Productions and Netflix.

For me, this is awesome news. I am a huge fan of the show and cannot wait for new episodes. I just hope Netflix are able to do more episodes “quicker” than they do with other seasonal originals as binge watching this show will make waiting for new ones unbearable. There is always Tubi TV for free episodes, or Amazon Prime and Hulu if you subscribe to those services.

Some of the supernatural themed episodes consumed as a child are imprinted in my memory to this day.

I credit this show with helping me develop my interest in the unknown and the supernatural.

Yup... and of course Sightings was incredible for that if you saw it around the same time too!

I had completely forgotten about Sightings. It was a great show as well. Supernatural variety shows were awesome back then, even if we only had a couple.

This show is how I became a Robert Stack fan way before he did Beavis and Butt-Head Do America!

I wrote to Robert Stack all the way back in the mid 1990s. He sent back something like 5 autographed pictures of himself, both from playing Elliot Ness way back when he was younger and him in the trenchcoat from Unsolved Mysteries! It was probably the best response I ever got from a celebrity! I actually wrote him another letter thanking him for sending me so many pictures and sure enough, he sent me a few more autographed pictures!

And yes, I still have those pictures!

Were they different pictures?

That is awesome that he did that. Most celebrities ignore fans that write to them.

Yes, they were different pictures. I’ll have to dig them out if the basement and show them to you one of these days.

That makes it even more awesome. Means he didn't just have a set collection of pics that everyone got. Makes me like the guy even more.

I think he must have multiple pictures from different points of his career. The coolest picture was the one of him holding a machine gun from The Untouchables in black and white wearing an old school suit! He looks great in it!

That makes it even more special that he sent you different pics especially considering his film and television career.
