Trees after the last large forest fire

As you may recall Portugal was devastated by forest fires in 2017

Yesterday I visited an area that was reached by the 15th October 2017 fire. It was a nice surprise to see some green...the vegetation is recovering and transforming that scorched landscape.

Here is a cork oak tree (Quercus suber), which has a thick bark that protects it against fires.

Here we see another cork oak tree (in the front) and various Pinus trees on the back. Those didn't resist to the fire and will be cut one day (probably soon).

In Portugal we use to say that green means hope...and it's true!!

These green sprouts are a sign of hope for our forest!

With time almost all cork oak trees will recover, along with our Mediterranean​ native shrubs. Hopefully,​ our work will help detain the invasive plants (Acacias and Hakeas) that are also recovering now, but that's another story...a long one!
