What you see here, is a part of a traditional celebration, named 'Shrovetide', or A Pancake Week, or Masleniza. It is still celebrated in Russia and other countries. In russian it is named Maslenniza (Масленница).

Today, people celebrating it with making loads of tasty pancakes (and eat them!), and mostly that is all. But theres more to it, actually!

The fun includes burning a special doll, also called Shrovetide.

Shrovetide is an ancient Slavic holiday that came from pagan culture and survived after the adoption of Christianity. Shrovetide falls on the week preceding Lent. Where did the name come from? One version says that this week, according to the Orthodox tradition, meat was already excluded from food, and dairy products could still be consumed, hence the "Shrovetide".

Shrovetide is the most fun and satisfying folk festival lasting a whole week. An integral part of the festival was horse riding, on which the best harness was worn. The guys who were going to marry, especially for this ride bought a sled. All young couples certainly participated in skating. Equally widespread, as well as holiday riding on horses, were riding young people from the icy mountains, jumping over a fire and taking a snowy town.

All this is in the peasant past ... But our company (parents with children) celebrate this holiday every year. We burn the real big Maslenitsa, take round dances around the campfire for a long time, jump over it, and write notes (we list all the bad things that we want to leave in the past year), put the doll in our purse, and burn it. Someday I will make a real photo post about this.

ps. the person on the right is my friend, a big russian artist, who creates annually the actual doll we burn.

Oh, great! By the way, we have Масленица too, it's generally a big bread with greaves (пръжки), however we don't celebrate but just eat it instead 😂 It's baked only in some country regions in the first months of the year.

i'd say, that is not much left from the ancient celebrating traditions :P

You're right, unfortunately and of course we have plenty of other holidays and festivals 😉📷

I am postponing for a long time a travel photo story about one new festival presenting ancient Bulgarian rituals, I guess I have to sit and finally write that... 🍻📝

😊 You must have sensed me lurking on your account trying to find the newest challenge. I've been so busy yesterday helping a friend move i completely forgot to enter. This is another view from the Caudon waterfront in Port Louis in Mauritius. I cannot remember whether I used my cell phone or my Canon ixus185 20mp camera for this one?🤔 I am only a hobbyist and I use either my Huawei phone, Canon ixus185 or antique Canon 1000d slr which is an antiquated 10mp. 😂

Wonderful, thank you, does the camera matter nowadays when most of our photos are used only online? 🤔😉

You've brought a memory to me, I've been living for few months on the riverbank of Thames... I loved it.

As the second participant today, here is a complimentary:

@dkkarolien,
the antique Canon 1000d is far better than my more antique 350d, which I used A LOT in the previous decade, my entry above is made with it. so dont feel sorry -- you can harvest a great images with that camera!

@qwerrie I hear you. I long for the day that I have enough money to upgrade. Having said that. I've got a teeny little Canon ixus185 which is a 20mp and it takes amazing photos. Just not anything that moves as it blurs. One can but dream. 😅

I went on a hike last week, climbing up the mountain through the bamboo forest. I had been climbing non stop for about an hour when I took this photo and was already running out of breath. However, I couldn't resist taking a shot of these flight of steps. They blend in perfectly with nature.PSX_20190811_011834.jpg

Truly amazing staircase, built from natural materials, thank you for sharing it with us, @sinochip! 👌📷🍻
