Indonesia #08: Diving in Amed – Day 2 [EN/GER]

Today it is time for the 9th best diving site on this planet, at least according to SCUBA travel (https://www.scubatravel.co.uk/topdiveslong.html). Today it is time for diving the wreck of the USAT Liberty!

After breakfast we went to the dive center and had a short ride with a jeep to Tulamben. The USAT Liberty was an American cargo ship in the WW II, which was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine in 1942. Today it lies close to the shore of Tulamben, because a volcanic eruption moved it to the beach in 1963. It is so close to the shore, that you enter the water via beach entry. You will see the ship shortly after descending. The shallowest part of the ship is 5m deep, and the deepest part is 30m deep, so this dive site is suitable for both beginners and advanced divers. The wreck itself is covered with lot of beautiful corals.

There is also plenty of marine life to see like jackfish, eels, turtles and (if you are lucky) Black Tips.

So is this really one of the best dive sites in the world? In our opinion it is a fantastic dive, but not one of the best dive sites ever. The main issue you will have when diving here, is the incredible amount of other divers. We went there in March (which is still low season) and already at this time there were quite a few other divers down there. Our divemaster told us, in August it is so crowded, that you barely keep moving forward. The wreck itself is impressive and the visibility was alright, so at the end we enjoyed this dive, but we think it is overhyped. If you want dive the Liberty wreck you should go really early in the morning to avoid the crowds!

Our second dive at this day was the Drop-off. As the name says, it is a huge drop off with lots of corals and some huge sea fans. This one is also a must if you are diving in Bali!

Heute ist es Zeit für den neuntbesten Tauchplatz aller Zeiten, zumindest wenn es nach dem SCUBAtravel Magazin geht (https://www.scubatravel.co.uk/topdiveslong.html). Heute ist es Zeit für das Wrack der USAT Liberty!

Neben dem eigentlichen Wrack gibt es auch einige wundervolle Korallenformationen zu bestaunen

Nach dem Frühstück ging es erstmal per Jeep nach Tulamben. Die USAT Liberty war ein amerikanisches Versorgungsschiff im zweiten Weltkrieg und wurde 1942 von einem japanischen U-Boot torpediert. 1962 wurde das Wrack durch eine Eruption des Vulkans Mt. Agung vor die Küste Tulambens befördert. Das Wrack liegt so nahe an der Küste, dass man beim Tauchen einen Eingang vom Strand macht. Kurz nach Abtauchen sieht man bereits das Schiff. Das Wrack erstreckt sich von einer Tiefe von 5m bis hin zu 30m und ist somit sowohl für Tauchanfänger, als auch Fortgeschrittene geeignet. Das gesamte Wrack ist mit zahlreichen wunderschönen Korallen bewachsen.

Zudem gibt es reichlich Unterwasserleben zu bestaunen. Jackfish, Muränen, Schildkröten und (falls man Glück hat) auch ein Schwarzspitzen Riffhai.

Ist das nun einer der besten Tauchplätze aller Zeiten? Unserer Meinung nach ist dies ein toller Tauchgang, aber nicht gut genug für eine Top 10. Der Hauptgrund ist die unglaubliche Anzahl an weiteren Tauchern. Wir waren im März dort und da war schon ziemlich viel los. Unser Divemaster meinte nur, im Sommer würde es da unten wie auf einer Straßenkreuzung zugehen, sodass man zum Teil „anstehen“ muss um weiter zu kommen. Das Wrack selbst ist eindrucksvoll, die Sichtweiten sind ganz in Ordnung und auch die Korallen waren schön. Alles in allem haben wir den Tauchgang auf jeden Fall genossen, jedoch denken wir, dass er überbewertet ist. Wenn ihr vorhabt die Liberty zu tauchen, solltet ihr auf jeden Fall früh morgens kommen um den Massen aus dem Weg zu gehen!

Unser zweiter Tauchgang an diesem Tag war der Drop-off. Eine große Steilwand mit unzähligen Korallen und einigen gigantischen Gorgonienfächern – auf jeden Fall ein Muss wenn man in Bali taucht!
