Dear Food Diary #5: Tajikistan, Uzbekistan & Turkmenistan

in #travelfeed5 years ago (edited)

Dear Steemian Foodies,

It's been a while since we've blogged about food. We have been eating a lot though, we can guarantee that! This diary entry is a continuation from the previous one because we are still in Central Asia where the people are still of Turkic descent.

To share our eating experience in the three countries, we have written the name in the local language, the English description/name and then the location where the food can be found.

Breakfast

1. Oмлет и Cалат | Omelette & Salad | Karakul, Tajikistan

A really easy breakfast we had was omelette (only eggs!) and a tomato onion salad. To make it go further we always ate it with bread.

2. Ширбиринҷ | Rice pudding with Milk | Urmetan, Tajikistan

Rice pudding made with milk and topped with a little butter. A very simple meal but great on a cold morning.

3. Чай и Хлеб | Tea & Bread | Vibist, Tajikistan

Tea (similar to English Breakfast with milk)… with a bit of added salt and butter. Pieces of fresh bread are added to soak up the tea. It's not a bad meal once you think about the tea as a soup instead.

Main

4. Соус из картофел | Potatoes on Sauce | Vibist, Tajikistan

Boiled potatoes served in a nice sauce, probably from a beef or chicken stock. Also eaten with bread to make the dish go further.

5. Плов | Fried Rice with Lamb | Urmetan, Tajikistan

Fried rice served with slow cooked lamb or beef. It is fairly oily so the rice don't stick together. We have tried this many times and really appreciate the efforts and time put into making this delicious meal.

Snacks

6. Чебуреки & беляши | Chebureki & Belyash | Dushanbe, Tajikistan

Chebureki (left) is a deep-fried turnover with a filling of minced meat and onions. Belyash (right) is deep-fried dough also filled with minced meat.

7. Сметана | Cream | All Central Asia

Lightly sweetened cream that can be used as a topping, dip for bread or eaten as is. We bought this mistaking it for yoghurt but ended up liking it very much!

8. Сamсa | Samsa | Bukhara, Uzbekistan

Filo pastry filled with mince and onion folded into a triangle shape. Sesame seeds are sprinkled on top and then it is oven baked. Very cheap snack.

9. Mанты | Dumpling | Sarahs, Turkmenistan

Meat or vegetarian mixture wrapped in a dough wrapper, then steamed. Various sauces can be used, in our case we got yoghurt.

10. Nabat | Crystal Sugar | All Central Asia

Hard sugar used commonly for tea. They come in several colours, with orange being most common, this is infused with saffron. Some local have told us it is much better and healthier than white sugar, but we aren't so sure about that.

We hope you enjoyed this entry of the Food Diary. Next time we'll be featuring Iranian food where we'll be spending the winter months.
