One of the most respectful languages in the world. Part II

Part I

Pro and Cons

So, what is the difference between the Korean language courses at Haniang University and the University of Foreign Languages? First, I’ll say right away that there are pros and cons everywhere. For example, having a buddy is very cool and interesting. BUT, here, too, have their pitfalls. As they say, we are all different people and buddies are also different. When we came to Hanyang for 3 weeks, everyone had their own buddy. So, then someone was “very lucky” - the buddy made me study 24/7. While other buddies combined their studies with parties, well, or simply left all the responsibility for the training part for foreign students, while they themselves were only ready to hang out, hang out, hang out! I had just such a buddy.

I went to Korea with my sister and girlfriend, and the three of us, plus 3 our buddies, walked almost every day. We barely slept. We went to classes in the morning, had lunch in the dining room during the day, walked in the evening, and at night half-open eyes did our homework .... But it was a lot of fun. We communicated with the locals in an incomprehensible mixture of languages, English-Korean with a predominance of sign languages. You understand what my level of Korean was at that time, considering that I hadn’t taught it before ...

At the University of Foreign Languages a very strong program for the practice of speaking. Each semester you need to make at least 1 presentation, trying to use as much grammatical turns and words as possible. Also, during classes, the teacher always tries to talk with students as much as possible. And at senior levels, debates are held, and the oral exam is also held in the form of debates.

A visit to a traditional village during Korean courses

Once a semester, outdoor activities are organized at the University of Foreign Languages. This is usually group trips to parks (of which there are many in Korea), to concerts or sporting events. Also, there are workshops on cooking Korean dishes or any fakes. Such activities are in many universities. At Khanyang University every Wednesday is a day of cultural events.

Few more facts about Korean language and alphabet

  • First, the Korean alphabet Hangul was coined in the 15th century by the fourth king of the Joseon dynasty, Sejong the Great. Before that, Chinese characters were used in Korea.

First writing

  • Secondly, in Korean there are 6 levels. Levels 1 and 2 are basic, 3 and 4 are intermediate levels, 5 and 6 are advanced levels. If you pass the exam on the knowledge of the Korean language at level 5 or 6, then we can say that you are fluent in the language. And by the way, not all Koreans can pass level 5 or 6, because not everyone knows the grammar so well.…

  • Thirdly, there are about 5 dialects in Korean. Different regions of the country have their own dialect. And the strongest dialect on Jeju Island.
  • Fourth, Korean is one of the most polite in the world. As in Korean, different words are used depending on the interlocutor’s status or age.
  • Fifth, there are 2 kinds of numerals in Korean: Korean and Chinese. You need to remember when to use Chinese numerals, and when Korean.
