Polignano a Mare and his old Town

in #travelfeed4 years ago

This Sunday we spent it in **Polignano a Mare**, the city of **Domenico Modugno** that stands on a blue sea, destination every year of the event **Red Bull Cliff Diving**, world tournament in which daring divers challenge each other from a height of about 27 meters.

---

We arrive in the city leaving our car from the parts of the train station and proceed on foot to reach the **Piazza Aldo Moro**, an expanse of white marble that often welcomes flea markets in which small artisans or simple lovers of DIY put on display their jobs, perhaps selling them to the public in order to continue to play their passion.

---

Proceeding we arrive at the entrance of the city, consisting of a massive arch with two side columns. Here you can choose to visit the city by mini taxi by bike but personally I recommend you visit the historic center on foot, it's not very big and you can better grasp many details. Entering the walls, you immediately perceive the tourist climate of the city, with lots of local craft shops selling souvenir items of the city but also clothes, shoes, necklaces, food and typical local products.

---

Thus we come to **Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II**, a much smaller square than Piazza Aldo Moro but with a much more concentrated concentration of tourists and locals. Here is also the **Chiesa Matrice Dell'Assunta**, currently being restored but has a really impressive tower and massive view from the outside. Continuing we enter the heart of the historic center made up of many small streets, all in excellent condition and very clean, where small traders exhibit their works and B & B plaques rise like mushrooms from every direction.

---

Along the way it is possible to stop and admire the views that the city of Polignano a Mare offers from some places called **Belvedere**. The day was particularly windy and the sea seemed really infuriated with its waves crashing against the cliff. The landscape, whatever the weather, is always a masterpiece, a painting on canvas that is difficult to reproduce. We continue along the narrow streets, where you can see small works of art scattered everywhere. Famous are the writings present on different staircases of the historical center, poems or thoughts of important poets of our past.

---

Leaving the historic center, we head to the ** Ponte di Polignano ** from which it is possible to observe **Lama Monachile** a small gulf frequented by tourists, narrow between the cliffs, and characterized by some caves that you can visit when the sea is calm. Continuing along the coast we arrive at the statue of Domenico Modugno, crowded with tourists and fans of the singer who do not miss the opportunity to take a picture. Behind the statue there is the **Staircase Volare**, always dedicated to the famous and timeless song by Modugno that leads us to the cliff, on which we stopped to observe the beauty of the sea and the coast.
