Charyn Canyon
I lived and worked in Almaty, Kazakhstan for 18 months. Just before I left, I took a trip with some friends to the amazing Charyn Canyon. (Wikipedia)
It's about 120 miles east of Almaty and made for a fantastic day trip with friends and work colleagues. Living and working in Kakazhstan was a fantastic experience that I'm so grateful I had. I made some life-long friends there and my Russian language skills really came on to the point where I was actually dreaming and thinking in Russian first.
The canyon was featured in the travel documentary that Ewan McGregor and Charlie Boorman made called Long Way Round, where they actually took their motorcycles down into the canyon.
