The Jesus Statue in Tarcal, Hungary!

in #travelfeed5 years ago (edited)

It was quite funny, that during our stay in Tarcal, we by a coincidence bumped into information about the Jesus statue that was raised in the village in 2015. It was very much inspired by the statue in Rio, but smaller, and not at all as well known. At once, I knew that this is a place to go, so the first thing we did the next morning was to visit the statue!

Walking to the Jesus statue in Tarcal

The trip to the statue is really simple. You can park your card or park a bus, and from there it is a really nice walk to the top. But, for those with bad legs, they have even made it possible to enjoy an extra service which will take you to the top with smaller cars. To make the walk even more enjoyable, there are benches placed everywhere along the road, making it easy to spend a while walking to the top while drinking some coffee, having a chat, or maybe to meditate and think about the statue and what you see on the top.

The total length of the walk from the parking lot to the top is around 400-600 meters, depending on whether you walk the stairs or follow the normal road. The statue itself has a weight of 50 tons and it is around 8 meters high.

The statue is called Blessing Jesus statue. It is a bit different from most other statues, because Jesus isn't holding his arms out. Instead, he is holding one arm in front of his body, while he is almost holding the other in front of his body pointing at you, or maybe saying a blessing over you.

I haven't seen a lot of big Jesus statues before, but I really liked this not. Not only is the walk nice, and the view is nice, but it is also nice thinking about a Jesus who is standing there on the mountain blessing everyone who passes by! :)

The road to the top has some stairs, but it is also possible to use the normal road without any stairs. If you take that road, you can even enjoy a beautiful view towards a small hidden lake that looks really nice as you pass by it.

A small lake that can be seen from the Blessing Jesus statue in Tarcal.

You might not want to travel the world to visit this statue, but if you ever are in the area, this is for sure a place I would visit. I greatly enjoyed it, and I hope to get back there sometime soon again!

Do not forget, Tokaj is the region producing some of the best white wines in the world. The Tokaj Aszu wine is world-famous and often served together with blue cheese, Roquefort, and other delicious cheese brands. If you visit the region, make sure not only to visit this statue but also to taste the fantastic white wines produced in the region.
