YourMateTravels#19 - Koh Sichang - Overrated Or Underrated?

Funny thing is: You go out there to get to know the world, but actually get to know yourself.
Before I think into that thought to much, let’s talk about Koh Sichang:

We took it easy and went for a relaxed stay, where this island was just perfect.
Numerous things were good, a few things distressing. Let me paint you a picture with the next paragraphs:

Das Lustige ist: Man geht raus in die Welt, um sie kennenzulernen - am meisten lernt man dabei aber sich selbst kennen.
Bevor ich mich jetzt in diesem Gedanken verliere, reden wir erst mal über Koh Sichang:

Wir haben uns einen gemütlichen Aufenthalt gemacht, wofür diese Insel perfekt war.
Einiges war gut, anderes wiederum erschütternd. Lass mich dir mit den nächsten Absätzen ein Bild davon malen:

Koh Sichang Island

Overall it’s pretty basic, has few tourists and not the Thai beach party life many people are talking about. And that’s the thing I liked most about it: the absence of loud eccentric farangs (like I myself can be as well tbh). “Farang” is the Thai word for a white person.
Partly holey concrete and asphalt roads wind across the island. Sometimes stoney, sometimes earthy. The less frequented ones only have a small track of scooters in the middle - besides are leftovers from leaves and bushes take over half of the street. Some streets are just country lanes - but those are the ones tourists probably won’t drive.

Insgesamt ist es hier ziemlich einfach, es gibt wenige Touristen und es fehlen die typischen Thai-Partystrände, von denen man oft hört. Und das war die Sache, die mir am meisten gefiel: die Abwesenheit von lauten, exzentrischen Farangs (wie ich auch einer sein kann, um ehrlich zu sein). “Farang” ist das Thai Wort für eine weiße Person.
Teils löchrige Beton- und Asphaltstraßen winden sich über die ganze Insel. Manchmal steinig, manchmal erdig. Die weniger befahrenen Straßen haben nur eine kleine Spur von Rollern in der Mitte - an den Seiten übernehmen Moos, Laubreste und hereinwachsende Büsche die Fahrbahn. Manche Straßen sind nur Feldwege - aber dabei handelt es sich um welche, die Touristen wahrscheinlich nicht befahren werden.

At the time of my travel (beginning of february) it’s about 30°C, the air is rather dry and the sun is shining most of the time.
Walking around I get the impression as if this island was getting ready for the big rush of tourists that never came. There’s infrastructure that looks abandoned. Many things are in need for renovation but that also adds to the character of this island. Some parts of the island remind me of eastern european countries with leftovers of communist times.

Zur Zeit meiner Reise (Anfang Februar) hat es um die 30°C, die Lust ist eher trocken und die Sonne scheint die meiste Zeit.
Beim Herumgehen bekomme ich den Eindruck, als hätte sich die Insel auf einen Touristenansturm vorbereitet, der nie kam. Es gibt zwar einiges an Infrastruktur, die allerdings verlassen aussieht. Einige Dinge sind renovierungsbedürftig, aber das verleiht der Insel auch einen besonderen Charakter. Eine Teile der Insel erinnern mich an osteuropäische Staaten mit Rückständen aus kommunistischen Zeiten.

By the way: If you search for this island online you may be irritated: Koh Sichang, Ko Sichang, Koh Si Chang, Ko Si Chang, Sichang Island or Kosichang? Well, we’ve seen it every way now. Even two adjacent public signs were written differently. I guess it’s because there’s no definite way to express this Thai name in latin letters.

Übrigens: Wenn du online nach der Insel suchst, bist du womöglich irritiert: Koh Sichang, Ko Sichang, Koh Si Chang, Ko Si Chang, Sichang Island or Kosichang...wir haben mittlerweile alle Varianten gesehen. Sogar zwei öffentliche Schilder nebeneinander mit unterschiedlichen Schreibweisen. Ich nehme an, dass sich die Thai Sprache hier nicht eindeutig mittels lateinischem Alphabet darstellen lässt.

In my honest opinion this island got spared by said "rush" and therefore can be a calm place for those who like it that way. The island is rich of buddhist culture, of which can be seen more at the lower part of the post.

Meiner ehrlichen Meinung nach wurde diese Insel eher von diesem Ansturm "verschont" und kann ein Ruhepol für Reisende sein. Die Insel ist reich an buddhistischer Kultur, von der man im unteren Teil des Posts noch etwas zu sehen bekommt.

Mentioning infrastructure though: they have plenty of trash bins all over the main roads. Very positive!

Wo ich allerdings schon von Infrastruktur rede: hier gibts entlang der Hauptstraßen immer wieder Mistkübel. Sehr positiv!

On this island they have a school and close to the gardens of the royal palace we even spotted a building which said “university”.

Auf dieser Insel gibt es eine Schule und nahe der Gärten beim alten königlichen Palast entdeckten wir sogar ein Gebäude mit der Aufschrift "university".

Yes, that’s the gym.

The Wildlife

Two things cannot be overseen: the dogs and the hogs.

Zwei Dinge sieht man sofort: die Hunde und die Schweine.

And that partly is quite funny! They’re in the bushes, on the side of the road, on the road and in the town! Same goes for dogs and hogs, but they come with a different story.
Hogs first: They actually aren’t wild but belong to a citizen of the island: the owner of the dumpside. Apparently they aren’t properly fenced in, so they sometimes escape. Then they eat the garbage and breed. Obviously everybody is ok with the hogs running around. If a local wants to kill and eat a pig, he goes over to the dumpsite owner, pays for the pig and then simply proceeds with the rest of the business.
The dogs: People got dogs and when they reproduced, they decided they don’t want to feed more than one dog - so they gave the pups to mother nature. The surviving ones now reproduce, form packs and may slowly become wild.

Und das ist teilweise echt witzig! Sie sind im Gebüsch, am Straßenrand, auf der Straße und im Ort unten! Gleiches gilt für Hunde und Schweine, jedoch unterscheidet sich ihre Geschichte.
Erstmal die Schweine: Es handelt sich nicht um Wildschweine, sondern sie gehören einem Bewohner der Insel: dem Eigentümer der Mülldeponie. Offensichtlich zäunt er sie nicht ordentlich ein, wodurch sie manchmal entkommen. Dann essen sie Müll und pflanzen sich fort. Offenbar finden es alle OK, dass die Schweine rumlaufen. Wenn jemand ein Schwein töten und essen will, geht er zum Eigentümer der Mülldeponie, bezahlt für das Schwein und macht sich ans Werk.
Die Hunde: Ein paar Leute haben sich Hunde angeschafft und als sie sich vermehrten, wollten sie nicht mehr als einen füttern - also haben sie die Welpen ausgesetzt und Mutter Natur überlassen. Die überlebenden pflanzen sich nun fort, formen Rudel und könnten langsam verwildern.

Apart from those obvious encounters, there should also be lizards (up to 2 meters), venomous spiders, snakes (also green pythons), scorpions and monkeys (“ling” in Thai language) and geckos.
We’ve never seen any of those, except for the geckos and a video of a big lizard climbing the stairs of our hotel. Just beware of the monkeys because they may want to eat off your face with their sharp teeth if you stare into their eyes.
In general all those wild animals normally are scared of you and run away. So you’ll probably never see them.

Neben diesen offensichtlichen Begegnungen, sollte es auch Echsen (bis zu 2 Meter), giftige Spinnen, Schlangen (auch Grüne Pythons), Skorpione und Affen (“ling” in Thai Sprache).
Wir haben keines dieser Tiere gesehen, abgesehen von Geckos und einem Video von einer riesigen Echse, die die Stiegen bei unserem Hotel hinaufsteigt. Man sollte sich nur davor in Acht nehmen, dass einem die Affen mit ihren scharfen Zähnen nicht das Gesicht runterfressen, weil man ihnen in die Augen gestarrt hat.
Insgesamt werden all diese Wildtiere aber eher vor einem davonlaufen, weil sie Angst haben. Somit sieht man sie selten.

As I said, I didn’t see any of the above. But did I mention that they have cats?

The People

It’s the small town life here. Apparently everybody knows everybody, most people are well-disposed and as with every community you surely have the black sheeps as well somewhere. It’s important to stick together and help each other out. Social life is the key.

Hier herrscht das Kleinstadtleben. Offensichtlich kennt jeder jeden, die meisten Leute sind gut gesinnt und wie es mit jeder Gesellschaft ist, gibt es bestimmt auch hier irgendwo schwarze Schafe. Zusammenhalt und gegenseitiges Aushelfen sind wichtig. Sozialleben ist der Schlüssel dazu.

Having a simple life one is happy about his few belongings. The highest goods always are the family and the social contacts. Those are the sweetness of life.
No one here gives a shit about political correctness or other imaginary problems because they tend to solve actual problems. Like what to eat tomorrow.

Einfach zu leben bedeutet, sich über die wenigen Besitztümer zu freuen. Die größten sind immer die Familie und die sozialen Kontakte. Sie versüßen einem das Leben.
Niemand hier kümmert sich einen Dreck um politisch Korrektheit oder sonstige imaginäre Probleme, weil sie mit echten Problemen konfrontiert werden. Wie zum Beispiel das Beschaffen von Essen.

If you have a real house, you have more than most. If you have animals, boy you’re nearly wealthy.

Wenn du echtes Haus hast, hast du mehr als die meisten. Wenn du Tiere hast, ja dann bist du schon fast wohlhabend.

Keep that in mind, when you come here - as with every other holiday. Those people share their home with you, so that you can experience their country and ways. Be respectful and accept cultural differences. And do yourself a favor: never ever get into a fight with a local. You may have your buddies but each and everyone here has an entire island behind them.

Behalte das im Hinterkopf, wenn du herkommst - sowie bei jeder Reise. Die Leute hier teilen ihr Heimatland mit dir, damit du ihre Heimat und Lebensweise kennenlernen kannst. Sei respektvoll und akzeptiere kulturelle Unterschiede. Und tu dir selbst einen Gefallen: gerate niemals in einen Streit mit einem Einheimischen. Du hast vielleicht deine Freunde, aber jeder einzelne hier hat eine ganze Insel hinter ihm.

People around here trust each other.

Eating at “Sichang Grill” the friendly waitress tells us “My friend say you beautiful. She no speak english. She tell me I tell you. My friend no husband.” We immediately see where this is going.
I can imagine some guys in europe constantly experience rejection from the ladies at home and feel coveted for the first time after such an event. So I won’t judge any of those and rather see their action as a natural course of events.
Since I barely talked to locals so I can only tell about my personal impression. So I guess one’s gotta be kind to tourists, because they probably bring the highest amount of money to the island. Maybe you or one of your cousins can even marry a farang - god bless! This is honorable, since it’s economically beneficial for the family and you also diversify your genetic material.

Als wir beim “Sichang Grill” essen, sagt uns die liebe Kellnerin “Meine Freundin sagt ihr schön. Sie kein Englisch spricht. Sie sagt mir ich sag euch. Meine Freundin noch keinen Mann.” Wir sehen sofort, in welche Richtung das geht.
Ich kann mir gut vorstellen, dass viele Männer daheim in Europa ständig Ablehnung von der Frauenwelt erleben und sich hier zum ersten Mal begehrt fühlen. Da verurteile ich niemanden, sondern sehe das eher als natürlichen Verlauf der Dinge.
Da ich wenig mit den Einheimischen geredet habe, kann ich nur von meinem persönlichen Eindruck erzählen. Schätzomativ heißts hier besser freundlich zu Touristen sein, da diese wahrscheinlich am meisten Geld auf die Insel bringen. Vielleicht kannst du oder eine Cousine sogar mal einen Farang heiraten - so Gott will! Das ist ehrenhaft, da es der Familie wirtschaftliche Vorteile bringt und dem genetischen Material Diversität verleiht.

The Food

Talking about dinner makes me think of all the good and cheap food we ate here.
We had it all. The fried chicken on a stick for 10 THB (=0,26 €) off the mobile kitchen:

Wo ich gerade vom Abendessen rede, erinnere ich mich an all das gute und günstige Essen, das wir aßen.
Wir hatten alles. Das frittierte Hühnchen am Spieß für 10 THB (=0,26 €) aus der mobilen Küche:

Every now and then I’d treat myself with a good coffee for 45 THB (=1,16 €). And it was ALWAYS good.

Dann und wann hab ich mir noch nen guten Kaffee für 45 THB (=1,16 €) gegönnt. Und die waren IMMER gut.

Come On, Take A Ride With Us

Now that we’re full of energy after all those meals, let’s take a trip around the island!
After walking around the island for two days we finally got ourselves to rent a scooter (250 THB/day (= 6,45 €)) for four days and ride the entire island. That was a lot of fun! :D

Nachdem wir zwei Tage auf der Insel herumspazieren, bewegen wir uns schließlich dazu, einen Roller (250 THB/Tag (= 6,45 €)) auszuleihen und die ganze Insel abzufahren. Das hat erst Spaß gemacht! :D

I guess I don't need to mention that the speedometer didn't work.

Plenty of sights are to be seen on this tiny island. Quite all of them are of buddhist nature or have to do with the royal family. These sights also seem to attract Chinese tourists during the Chinese New Year - as we are about to leave the island, the Chinese come in waves.
Instead of indulging in the goods of human culture we decided to actually check out most of those sights.

Viele Sehenswürdigkeiten gibt es auf dieser kleinen Insel. So ziemlich alle sind buddhistischer Natur oder haben mit der Königsfamilie zu tun. Diese Sehenswürdigkeiten scheinen auch chinesische Touristen anzuziehen - kurz vor unserer Abreise kommen sie in Scharen.
Anstatt den Genüssen der menschlichen Güter zu fröhnen, haben wir uns tatsächlich fast alle dieser Sehenswürdigkeiten angesehen.

But as we reach the top of the island the first time, we finally see the SMOG in all it’s beauty.
This makes you feel sad, angry and guilty at the same time. I instantly feel bad for renting a scooter with combustion engine - at least we share just one.

Doch als wir das erste Mal einen hohen Punkt der Insel erreichen, sehen wir das volle Ausmaß des SMOG in seiner ganzen Schönheit. Man fühlt sich sofort traurig, wütend und schuldig zugleich. Ich fühle mich sofort schlecht, da wir einen Roller mit Verbrennungsmotor gemietet haben - immerhin teilen wir uns einen.

Whatl. Is. Up. With. That?

Since we cannot change the world in one day we simply focus on the good things for now and go on.

Nachdem wir die ganze Welt nicht an einem Tag verändern können, fokussieren wir uns erst mal wieder auf die guten Dinge und sehen uns die Insel weiter an.

After some time I found an opportunity to silence my conscience by cleaning up the shore a little bit:

Halfway through our stay an Austrian friend of mine comes over to take a break from Pattaya and visit us on Koh Sichang. His name is Michael and guess what he did: quit his job to travel for about a year. In fact, he’s the one person who opened up my mind to the very thought of working in a different country. Auf der Hälfte des Aufenthalts kommt uns ein österreichischer Freund meinerseits auf Koh Sichang besuchen, der eine Pause von Pattaya braucht. Sein Name ist Michael und rate mal, was er gemacht hat: seinen Job gekündigt, um ein Jahr reisen zu gehen. The next day we head to the beach to observe natural spectacle, a special kind of sunset I have never seen before. I call it: The Smogset.

Am nächsten Tag fahren wir zum Strand und observieren ein Naturspektakel, eine spezielle Form eines Sonnenuntergangs, die ich noch nie zuvor gesehen hatte. Ich nenne es: Den Smoguntergang.

Yes, you see that right. It just disappears in a thick layer of smog.
Ja, das siehst du richtig. Sie verschwindet in einer dicken Smogschicht.

Yes, the Bangkok smog really is a mess. So many nice views were basically clouded by this massive air pollution. I wish the view was the biggest problem caused by smog... The island itself is a treasure which happens to be a little to close to said smog cloud. This also depends on the direction of the wind - on our first day it was definitely less smoggy than all the other days.
Enough about that. Just enjoy one last nice picture of Tham Phang Beach before I end this post.

Ja, der Smog von Bangkok ist wirklich eine Sauerei. So viele schöne Aussichten wurden schlichtweg durch diese Luftverschmutzung versaut. Wenn die schönen Aussichten nur das größte Problem durch Smog wären... Die Insel selbst ist ein Schatz, der leider ein bisschen zu nah an der dicken Smogwolke liegt. Das kommt allerdings auch auf die Windrichtung an - an unserem ersten Tag war es definitiv weniger smoggy, als an allen anderen Tagen.

Is it over- or underrated? I just gave you a nuanced view, so it’s on you to decide for yourself.
Now that we’ve spent a week here I’d definitely recommend it to some people. As with all travel destinations, it always strongly depends on your preferences.
