Cheap bars in Prague – the ultimate backpackers boozing guide!

In this blog post, we will have a look at the top 10 cheap bars in Prague. You might wonder: “Who are you to compile this list, you are not even Czech.” Well, we spent 3 beautiful months in the city of Prague during the summer of 2017 and drank more than we did in the whole year together. It is not like we are bragging, but the beer was so good we could not resist! We have gathered and listed our favorite places to hang out, eat, meet new people and soak up the Bohemian atmosphere. Let’s have a look at the top 10 cheap bars in Prague.

U sudu

Vodičkova 677/10, 110 00 Nové Město, Czechia Through a wooden arch you enter a very tiny bar right off the street. It has 7 chairs as a maximum, but fear not because there is so much more. For the first three times we visited, we did not even know about all the hidden tunnels, however, this place is massive. It has 4 basements, around 200 m2 big with table football, arcade games and 4 bars, one in each basement compartment. It also has a ground floor with a kitchen and an outside terrace. U sudu opens already at 9 am so no worries, day drinking is acceptable. This place is very popular among locals and students because of the cheap prices, live music and amazing staff. This place is legendary, do yourself a favour and try pickled cheese!

Déjà vu

Jakubská 648/6, 110 00 Staré Město, Czechia Right in the city center! Happy hour cocktails for around $3.70 every day from 6 pm until 9 pm so it is a great place for pre-drinks. The cocktails are very tasty for the price and you can easily down at least 5 without breaking the bank. Try as many different cocktails as you can! The staff speaks great English and the music is good. The upstairs bar is quite tiny so be sure to arrive early to secure a seat for the happy hour during the high season. After 22:00 the downstairs bar/dance area opens its doors, so you can stay and party here until late night if you please. We used to go here every second night and still visit Déjà vu every time we are in Prague.

Al Capone’s

Bartolomějská 305/3, 110 00 Staré Město, Czechia An authentic cocktail bar, a hidden gem. You do not need a happy hour to come here for drinks, as they are very reasonably priced anyhow. Cocktails will set you back $3.40 while a shot plank with 6 shots is about $6. Try the plank with the rum cherry shots! The drink menu is extensive and I refuse to believe there is a daiquiri with a flavor they cannot make. The place is tiny as most of the bars in Prague, so come early to secure a seat. Al Capone’s opens at 7pm every day and stays open till the last customer. The place is decorated with old photos from Cuba, cigars and mafia relics. The vibe is very relaxed and the place is perfect for a group of friends who look for a place where their dollar goes a long way.

The Pub 1 and 2

Veleslavínova 3, 110 00 Staré Město, Czechia and The Pub 2 – Hálkova 6, 120 00 Nové Město, Czechia. Two different locations depending on which is closer to you, but the menu and the place are the same. Great place for big groups of friends where you can tap your own beer. You sit at a large table with a beer tap in the middle. You are provided with beer glasses and can tap your own draught if you prefer a thick layer of foam, go ahead and tap it like that. The beer is measured by the volume you drink and you can tap even a couple of sips. There is a huge screen where all the tables are listed and the number of beers the competitors have downed. Some of the results are purely mind-blowing and they have all-time best results listed as well.

They also serve a reasonably priced bar food including beef tartare, ribs, burgers, fish and chips, Czech foods etc. If you are alone or only a couple of people, go ahead and visit The Pub anyway, as you can also order drinks from the menu or still use the self-service beer tapping table. Great way to experience cheap bars in Prague is by starting with The Pub.

Příčný řez

Příčná 668/3, 110 00 Nové Město, Czechia This place is not really a bar but more like a restaurant. However, Pricny rez has made it to the list because of the cheap Hoogarden (white beer) and Sangrias. You can get Hoogarden for $1.40 for 0.5l and a 0.4l glass of sangria for less than $2. Mojitos will cost you $3 bucks, so there is something for everyone. The place is open from 10 am until 11 pm and you can stop here before going to a real party. They also serve very delicious, cheap food, which will not be your typical bar food but rather a decent restaurant experience. Give Pricny rez a try if you are in the neighborhood!

U Vystřelenýho oka

U Božích bojovníků 606/3, 130 00 Praha 3-Žižkov-Praha 3, Czechia U Vystřelenýho oka means The Shot-Out Eye. Great bar to blend in with the locals. Cheap beer, funky rock music, shabby and always busy. If you arrive and the bar is packed just do like the Czechs do – order a beer, stand at the bar and soak up the vibe. Wait until there’s a free seat at any of the tables, ask if it’s free and just sit down. If you feel like participating in the conversations, go ahead. This place portrays the true spirit of Bohemian bars. If you are the kind of person who loves to enjoy a cold beer in an authentic environment and you are not the person who has to spend his bucks in the main square posh, touristy places, this is the place for you! The Shot-Out eye must be the most local of the Cheap Bars in Prague.

Hany Bany

Veleslavínova 5, 110 00 Staré Město, Czechia Happy hour from 3 pm until 4 pm every work day right when the bar opens. This place might take the winners crown of the list cheap bars in Prague. Usually, there are people already waiting outside. Why? Because during happy hour you can get a 0. 5l beer for $0. 60. Basically 2 beers for $1.20. Locals usually take the 1l jug directly, thus 1 + 1 for $1.20.

They also serve incredibly cheap bar snacks, including sausages, sandwiches, garlic bread, and peanuts. The bar has a long history and the rustic seamen design and old photos give you an amazing vibe. The place serves wine and cocktails as well, if you are not a beer drinker, for incredibly cheap. Considering Hany Bany’s great location in the city center, you should definitely pay the place a visit during the happy hour or any other time. We always go there when we feel like day drinking on a Saturday. Also when our friends come to visit Prague, prices shock everybody!

Be Pop Lobby Bar

Štěpánská 623/40, 110 00 Nové Město, Czechia The only fancy place on the list, seriously! The price for the service is very reasonable and the cocktails are served as you have never seen before. A cocktail will be around $8 but you can enjoy hanging out in a Radisson Hotel lobby bar with dressed up staff, cotton towels in the bathroom, complimentary snacks and very nice music. The drink menu is an artwork itself and each cocktail has unique ingredients and serving style. You can choose from receiving a letter and sending a postcard (which will actually be sent) to playing table mini golf with your drink ingredients. We will keep the rest for you to discover when you get there. We highly recommend it for at least one drink, so you can sit back, relax and see how other of the inventive drinks are served as well.

Anonymous

Michalská 432/12, 110 00 Staré Město, Czechia This bar is unique. As the name would suggest it is Anonymous. All the staff has Anonymous masks, which might remind some of the horror movies and some of the internet hacktivist group. It is a very quirky place to have a drink and similarly to Be Pop Lobby Bar Anonymous serve cocktails in a very special manner. Each cocktail has a different serving style, which, therefore, comes with a higher price than any other places on the list. A cocktail will be around $10, so if you are on a tighter budget simply visit any of the other places in the list. However, the place is very fun and watching the staff is a good activity in itself.

The Café-Pub Atmosphere

Smetanovo nábř. 327/14, 110 00 Staré Město, Czechia Atmosphere is a great place for many things, starting with daily lunch deals and finishing with late night drinks and dinners. It is located just out of Town Square and opposite the Vltava river. A pint of beer will cost you $1.70, but cocktails and wine are also very friendly priced. They have a table football and an outside terrace. The staff speaks great English and they are always friendly, which is quite uncommon. Atmosphere might be the most popular of the cheap bars in Prague amongst travelers.

Worthy mentions

  • Hemingway Bar (posh signature cocktails, quite pricey for serious drinking),
  • La Casa de la Vieja Havana (similar to Be Pop and Anonymous, quirky signature cocktails),
  • Bar “U Matěje” (happy hour 3 pm -6 pm, $2.30 for delicious cocktails).
