Traveling Tip: From Zakynthos to Kefalonia
The good thing of traveling a lot is that you gain experience on… Yes, you guessed: traveling! We @travelingstories would like to pass you the experiences we have, so that you can copycat and improve our own trips and avoid the mistakes we did :)
That’s why we decided to start a new venture here @travelingstories: “Traveling Tip”!
From time to time, we will be talking about a tip or a hack to improve your trips and to take the maximum out of your experiences :)
And today, we will be talking about traveling from Zakynthos to Kefalonia!
Yes, it might seem easy, but it’s not… If you check it on google maps, these two beautiful Greek Islands seem very close from each other… And they are, but traveling from one to the other has got its tricks!
On our trip to these islands (and that also involved the Mighty Athens and the Romantic Santorini), we started at Kefalonia. This was our first stop in Greece and we couldn’t feel more welcome…
But, after five days of amazing experiences in Kefalonia, we departed to our next stop, Zakynthos! (Yes, we had to visit the Shipwreck Beach! :D )
Although the two islands are separated by just a few dozens of km by the Adriatic Sea, traveling from one to the other isn’t that simple…
Basically, the cross can only be made by boat (ok, you can always catch a plane from one of them to Athens and then back to the other, but that doesn’t seem exactly cheap…) and there are essentially two options.
The first is to follow our lead!
What we @travelingstories decided was to pick up a ferry at Poros port, on the south of Kefalonia. It wasn’t a direct ferry, because that is the second option, and the trip of around 4 hours.
The stop happened on a port called Kyllini, where we changed to another ferry, which dropped us in Zante Town, the capital city of Zakynthos Island, about 1h30 later.
The whole journey cost us around 20€ per person. This is the price you can expect whether you chose Levante Ferries (like we did) or Kefalonian Lines or Zante Ferries. Also, pay attention to the biggest difficulty on this journey: to arrive at Poros port.
Although it’s near Skala, in the South of the island of Kefalonia, there’s only one bus from Argostoli (the island capital) that ends there, and the schedules sometimes don’t coincide with the ferry departure. Informe yourself before your journey or do like us and, after getting informed, pick up a taxi!
The second option is one we didn’t try. There’s another port in the South of Kefalonia that allows you to directly move to Zakynthos: Pessada. From there, you will reach Agios Nikolaos, on the Northern part of the Zakynthos Island.
The problem we found with this trip (which is faster than the one we did) was that both Pessada and Agios Nikolaos are not easily reached, so expect the need to grab a taxi!
