SteemFest 3: Sights of Krakow
Steemfest 3 is finished, and there have been many Krakow posts but I wanted this one on the blockchain to look back at in months or years to come.
@bingbabe was complaining that we hadn’t seen much of city, with SF3 and its activities taking the bulk of our time.
We stayed an extra day just for this reason and on the Monday morning after many had left strolled up to the city center.
We went to the square briefly the day before when the celebrations were happening and it was insanely busy, with people clambering over the statues in the center.
The next day was much more subdued, and we re-visited the Hard Rock to exchange a hoodie I got that was too small for me. I’m just getting far too fat, a side effect of getting old.
The city is a mixture of the old iron curtain days combined with more modern outlets like the Hard Rock Café in which we bought a few souvenirs.
There was a lot of graffiti evident in the city, and sometimes on doors like this one. The door looks like its dropping apart but is probably sturdier than it appears.
If you look more closely at the lock it’s new and has been used recently. This is no Urban Exploration area.
Much of the architecture is old and gothic in appearance. Note the green structure attached to this church.
Cars park on the pavement (sidewalk) here. It's OK to do this, but there are still parking meters.
Horse and Cart’s are for the tourists I suspect. We didn’t hire one, but they look very picturesque and are quite common on the streets.
We didn’t visit the castle due to lack of time. It’s an impressive looking building.
Pretzels were on sale everywhere by way of the street sellers. 1.70PZ is outstandingly cheap for one of these. That’s 45 cents in US money. The bread was big and fresh.
Closer to town and the price increases to 1.80PZ. The square will probably be even more. This sister was hungry and trying what was on offer.
We would have liked more time to explore Krakow. I suppose we didn’t really come for this reason, but I’m sure we missed lots, and there’s much more to see.

Lovely photos @slobberchops, thank you for sharing with us, I just love the old buildings! Wonder what that green structure is? But I see a number of other buildings also have similar green structures?
I'm not sure, I saw similar ones in Geneva earlier this year.
Excellent photos. I always think European cities look so pretty with their brightly-coloured and ornate old buildings. Our cities are so dull in comparison, with identikit high streets. OK, there is some good architecture in some of our bigger cities like Glasgow, Edinburgh and Liverpool but the styles are generally quite reserved and dignified, not as exuberant as on the Continent.
Yes, lots of colours as long as your not in the UK. I have seen the same in other euro places.
I loved seeing the photos you shared! It looks like a charming city! The architecture made me think of Eastern Europe. Those old wooden doors were fabulous. Such a shame that they were left to decay!
The look really battered and there's many just like this one.
What a great Krakow post, one of the best I've seen. I'm really glad you stayed the extra day.
50 cents for a fresh pretzel? I'm gaining weight just thinking about the possibilities...
Glad you are keeping your UX senses about you. Would have been epic to have a Krakow site...
Never thought of souvenirs from Hard Rock. I wouldn't mind a "Harley Davidson Krakow" T shirt, even though I don't ride a HD and won't. They do have good shirts (if you like black) and are reminders of where I've been.
All in all, a spectacular post. Thank you!
Thanks @bigtom13, I did get a black hoodie from the Hard Rock.
Food was cheap in Krakow if you looked for it. We ended up paying more than we should have really.
We didn't try the pretzels, but after having one in Germany I know they take some eating.
Very nice pictures...there is a lot to see obviously. They do have some history looking by the buildings and things..
You took some great photos in Krakow, the town has a great and sweet little vibe about it. I am glad that you got to chance to walk around and enjoy it.
I love old buildings as they reveal much about the time in which they were built; not only their construction methods, the way of thinking in regards to a building's function, but they were also a display of power and wealth.
Those old wooden doors are priceless, we can no longer afford to build that way today. Good shot and thanks for sharing :)
There were many of those old looking doors, with good locks on them. I thought some places may have been derelict but most were not.
Meanwhile I was curled up feeling very ill.
Much better use of the Monday this, and some lovely photos!
