Hike #15 : Pendle Hill
Pendle Hill is the highest peak within a short distance of where I live. It’s not even a mountain being not quite tall enough the claim that title.
@bingbabe was telling me that the steepest ascent from the village of Barley can be quite testing and with me ‘conquering’ two the three Yorkshire Peaks last year I thought it may be a good introduction of getting my legs going again (@natubat will be laughing now!)
I have climbed this pretend mountain before but not on the steepest face. We arrived on a lovely sunny day and started the most walked route up this lane.
Pendle was waiting for us, sneering.
After walking a few country lanes we came upon this sign. The textual content had been made little more flavoursome than its original intent.
Close to the foot there was a couple of older people with sticks or were they simply people with sticks. I peered up the hill and thought, ‘they are not gonna make it'.
@bingbabe, of course, left me behind and then started running up this steep trail, bloody show-off!
I, on the other hand, had to keep stopping for breathers. My legs were aching and I was running short of breath often. A couple of minutes rest and I was good for some more,
Pendle Hill is no Pen-y-ghent, and at no time did I suffer any vertigo or get shaky as I did with that one last year.
What we were suffering from was some kind of flying insect infestation. I got a snap of one in my car window here. They were everywhere, hovering in the air, getting in my eyes and mouth and generally being a nuisance.
The higher we climbed the less of them we saw and that was positive. What you see here was quite frequent; someone waiting for me to catch up!
The top was a welcome relief and not as hard as I thought. It was busy up there with plenty of families enjoying the good weather.
We settled down a little too close to the edge of a near vertical drop and almost fell asleep.
@bingbabe wanted some photographs and went a little too close to this drop for my comfort. Did you ever feel third-party vertigo?
Well, I do and it's never nice. While falling over this edge would not kill, it would certainly injure you.
Pendle Hill is probably what you would call a beginners hike or a refresher one for the likes of the unfit like me.
I plan to climb Whernside this year, which is the tallest of the Yorkshire Three Peaks and this is just a little training for me.

Very nice! It looks like it was a beautiful day for a walk. I think you will be ready in no time for those other peaks that you are planning to conquer. I think I probably would have needed a stick after a time too. I get winded just walking up the stairs from our basement. Sometimes I tend to surprise myself though!
There's few close to where we live and this is the big one.. though it's really not that big at all, and more famous for it's witches than hiking.
Ah, my bad. I thought you said the other ones were higher.

Great photos! I've camped near Pendle Hill (years ago) and me and my family have often admired it in the distance from Tebay Services, but I've never climbed it. This makes me want to!
My mum and sister are Quakers, and a big event in Quaker history was when George Fox preached on Pendle Hill in the 17th century - so I think I will have to climb this one sometime.
And yes, this post did make me laugh, but not at your efforts because it's an achievement to climb any hill! The secret of climbing a hill fast is simply practice, and Pendle Hill looks like a good practice hill to me, especially in that weather!
What made me laugh was that dog poo sign. I might steal it to share on my favourite Facebook hillwalking page.
The weather helped a lot, it was another hot one.. not really what we are used to. The weather is supposed to be good this weekend so maybe I can do another Marilyn. I'm sure you know what I mean by that.

After I read @bingbabe ran up the sharpest part of the trail, I thought who is bingbabe. After reading about the marathon she ran 6 months ago and all the trouble she had, I can see why she is capable of running to the top or anywhere she wants. Respect to you both...but a little more to bingbabe. Go girl!
She runs too much, so much that she's got bad knees now and yet still refuses to stop. it gets additive so I'm told, I could never get to grips with it. Climbing fells is more my scene, at least you can stop for a rest.
Ouch! Warning! One day she (you both) will be 70, I hope she doesn't have any regrets for her "love of the run". My husband and I are paying for our younger days of fun. I think moderation and yoga is the key for a less painful old age...if I could to do it again.
Looks like a nice day for it and that sign gave me a good chuckle, to some it may be considered a beginners hike or climb, but it looks pretty arduous to me
I plan on doing some more, probably higher than this.. these are called Marilyns due to their height in England.

Funnily enough my Wife’s name is Marilyn, mind you I seldom call people by there real name so she is Lulu to me
The reason the smaller hills are called Marilyns actually is because the highest hills are known as Munros — whoever named them had a sense of humour! 😂
And Marilyn and Lulu are both lovely names 😃
Yes indeed I Think you did a post explaining why the name Munros is used some Famous climber/Hiker if I remember correctly, but the name Masilun for smaller ones is amusing

It looks like an interesting peak to climb ^_^ We have similar peaks around my city, but my hubby doesn't love so much to walk there :D
He should, it's great exercise and gets you both outside. I guess the temperature's there may be hot at this time of year?

Pendle is 557 metres (1,827 ft) , so just short.
