Travel Diary. Uruguay Part II
The old city of Montevideo surprises us with its tourist attractions
Day 02: August 10th
The second day we went to Ciudad Vieja (old town), in the historic center of the city. The first site we visited was the Plaza Independencia. The José Artigas Monument was in the center of the square. He is considered the main hero of the nation. Crossways, the renowned Solís Theatre was found, the neoclassical structure is the main theater in Uruguay.
In the surrounding area there was also the emblematic Salvo Palace, one of the tallest buildings in Montevideo that has a twin in Buenos Aires known as Barolo Palace, both designed by the Italian architect Mario Palanti. In those places we took many pictures, in order to capture the pleasant moments we were having.
Then, we headed to Punta Carretas, a well-known neighborhood that has a boulevard that begins in a large portal and leads to the port. On the road, we could see varied handicrafts, among which we could not miss the popular Mate bowls. That drink is also widely consumed by Uruguayans; I remember that they claimed that their Mate was the best of all.
During the walk we passed by the Sarandi Boulevard, in the vicinity of Constitution square, also called Plaza Matriz, located in the old Citadel of Montevideo. In the center of the square, there was a beautiful fountain that commemorates the most important historical dates of the nation. There, we bought t-shirts printed with designs related to the city and the country. Besides, we could see the Metropolitan Cathedral, a beautiful temple of neoclassical style.
