It is accepted to be the first among the twelve jyotirlinga sanctuaries of Shiva. It is indeed a visitor spot of Gujarat. A sanctuary which had been plundered and destroyed by the intruders around 17 times for its overflowing gold and silver vault, Somnath Temple still has enough of resources for be called one of the most extravagant sanctuaries in India. The present sanctuary, worked in 1951, is the seventh reproduction on the first site. Stories of its wealth pulled in a progression of attacks, yet each time the sanctuary was attacked, it was reestablished to its unique grandness by faithful Hindu admirers. The sanctuary's commanding design incorporates complex carvings, silver entryways, a great Nandi symbol and the focal shivalinga. In the tremendous patio stand the gigantic mandapa (lobby), and also the fundamental hallowed place, whose delicately bended pyramidal structures overshadow the entire complex.

The Kartik Purnima Fair is held here for four days starting on Kartik Sud 14 as per the Hindu timetable, and draws in swarms in vast numbers.
