Magical Mexican City Tour: Huautla de Jimenez and the Traditional Dance, Costume and Music of the Native People

in #travel7 years ago (edited)

This a rare look at the traditional dance, costume and music

of the quiet, ancestral village of Santa Maria

and its’ nearby, better known neighbor, Huautla de Jimenez.

This remote northern village is located in the

Mexican state of Oaxaca.

It’s region is known as Canada and is part of the Teotitlan District.

Their history is shared by the Nahuatl

while a few continue to speak their native language, Mazatec.

To bring you up to date with the Huautla de Jimenez chapter of my story take a look at these past blogs:

My first day with Esmerelda and her family

just so happened to be graduation day

for the seniors at the community school.

With the graduation exercises there is also

the traditional school performances of dance and music,

complete with their own long established style of costume.

I felt very fortunate to be able to witness
this annual community event.

The photos and short videos below

are a rare opportunity to witness the community supported culture

of this highland remote area of Mexico.

Next, Esmerelda escorted me from her village, Santa Maria,

to the larger neighboring town, Huautla de Jimenez

where I witnessed in the community square

a live band of wind and percussion instruments

while colorful dancers performed.

The dances reminded me of the “square dances”

I learned as a child,

back in the 70’s in my Texas public school.

Keep Following.

I got many more fun-believable experiences,

and amazing photography,

I'm serious!

My stories are continuously unfolding as I continue my unique journey south.

My next blog is a delicious gallery of the local cuisine with a special look at Mole.
