Trip to Hogenakkal Falls

in #travel6 years ago

A friend of mine who is always all psyched up about going on trips showed up one Saturday and demanded restitution for all the times his plans have been canceled because of me. The payback? A trip to Hognikkal fall! To which I agreed and thus started our trip to the neighboring state.

Hogenakkal is a waterfall in South India on the Kaveri river in the Dharmapuri district of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is located 180 km (110 mi) from Bangalore. Sometimes referred to as the "Niagara Falls of India," it is known for medicinal baths and hide boat rides, projecting itself as a major tourist attraction.

7 AM

We started at 6:30 AM and after morning tea and fuel fill up we were on our way. The journey started pretty well, with guys blasting songs over the speaker and having a good time altogether. We took tea and pee breaks on the way and for the usual picture taking eventualities.

8:30 AM

We were in the ghats in an hour and a half and the scenery was just too good to not stop. The car which I was sat in was also running a bit ahead of the other one so we decide to stop and wait for the other one to catch up. Upon their arrival, we took some group photos for the memoir. With usual talk about other drivers not driving properly and how truckers are taking the fun out of road trips, we jumped in the car and were off again.

10:30 AM

It took us 4 hours to finally get there and with no prior knowledge of the ins and outs of that place we started to roam around in a wrong direction. After figuring out where to go we proceeded with excitement. The line to the boats was long so we had to wait but the time to board eventually came and we couldn't be happier.

11:30 PM

We hopped in the boats which are locally called "Teppa". These are entirely made with bamboo and the bottom is plastered with charcoal to make it waterproof. It could hold the weight of 8 people at once but the officials allow only 5 to be sat at once, for safety reasons.

11:45 AM

The Carbonatite rocks found in the region are considered one of the oldest in the world. The river has eroded its way through the rocks and from a boat, it looks stunning. We slowly made our way upstream in order to reach the waterfall.

11:46 AM

The oarsman somehow got us to the waterfall but since the flow was very strong we couldn't stay there for long.

11:50 AM

He also spun the boat which is crazy fun. You might wanna avoid it if you're easily dizzy.

Me contemplating life choices 😆

We then went to a bank where the rock formations were not high and we could easily climb onto them. That's where we kept our bags, removed our clothes and ran into the river. That part of the river is not very deep (and hence safe) but the flow was very strong and we usually found ourselves drifting 10-20 meters after a while in the water.

12: 15 PM

Oldest trick in the book

We spent around 2 hours doing pretty stupid stuff like the one above. After throwing each other off and getting exhausted we decided to leave. It was 2 PM and after having lunch we were on the road again.

This picture marks the end of ours as well as our phone's batteries. We slept all the way to home and after reaching slept some more. To my friend who forced me to come with him and to many more such trips.

Cheers!
