(Non-) Parisian Gourmet - Day 40: on vacation!

in #travel6 years ago

It's always funny to me, going to other countries and see their foods. It's also a bit strange to go to the country you spend your first 30 years in, and realize that while some thing have changed dramatically over the past 6 years of your absence, some thing still remain the same.

The Israeli cuisine is, supposedly, one of the healthiest in the world. If you look at the Mediterranean diet, and read a little bit about it, you'll see it's mostly about eating a lot of vegetables, olive oil (non-saturated fats), and not that much fat and fried foods. And that's just about what you get when you go to Israel. What they don't tell you is that the dishes in Israel are also HUGE, which is something one always has to get used to when coming from, let's say, France.

So this morning I went with my mother and my daughter to a cafe, to have some nice, decent Israeli breakfast, with good coffee (because, unlike in France - where you really have to look for good coffee - in Israel the coffee culture is inspired by Italy, and the coffee is usually really good). After some thinking, we decided to share a single breakfast - yes, technically it's meant to be breakfast one one, but all three of us shared it and had a good time, and we all had enough to eat.

Why is that, really?
Well, breakfast in Israel (the one you get in a cafe, not necessarily the one you eat at home) changes from place to place, but some things are constant:

  1. Every breakfast comes with 2 beverages: you can either have 2 hot beverages, 2 cold, or one and one. Of course, that doesn't include tap water, which you get for free (and taste very reasonable in most places).
  2. Bread. Somewhere between a large bun and a whole bunch of slices, again, depends on the place. We got 2 generous buns, and ordered another one for my daughter. We weren't charged for it.
  3. Eggs. Every person ordering the meal gets 2 eggs. So in our meal we got 2 eggs in total, and supplemented it with bacon (paid).
  4. Vegetable salad. Some places give you the choice of chopped or green salad, some don't. We got a really nice chopped salad, and asked for additional sliced cucumber for my daughter, who doesn't like the mix (they didn't charge us for that, too).
  5. Butter and/or jam to go with the bread. We also got some olives.
  6. Extras. If all that wasn't enough, you get some of what is called "mezze" in French, or "meze" in English. These tend to change depending on the cafe, the season, and sometimes also the day or even the hour. Some common meze are tuna, hummus, tahini, cream cheese, other types of soft cheese, and some places add a little sweetened yogurt and/or muesli on the side, too. We chose some cheese, some ikra spread (fish eggs with mayo of sorts, a Russian spread that I really like), and eggplants with parsley pesto, which were absolutely amazing.

Now, tell me, was that enough food for two adults and a child? The answer is - definitely yes. And most dishes in almost any restaurant here are like that.
So, the next time you go to Israel (or, for my Israeli readers - the next time you go to a cafe and feel like having a generous meal with friends), don't forget - sharing is caring. It's also good for your pocket and for your diet at the same time, and I doubt you'll go hungry.

In the photo: most of my breakfast. Remember, it's less than half of what we had on the table...
