Inmiddels is mijn vertrek vanuit het zuiden des lands naar een zuidelijker land alweer met rasse schreden dichterbij aan het komen. Eindhoven is wel de plek in Nederland waar ik me echt thuis voel, en het ook wel echt een beetje als ‘mijn stadje’ beschouw.

Wat ook tof is om te zien is dat er zo ontzettend veel veranderd elke keer als ik hier ben. Eindhoven timmert aan de weg, ze willen innovatief zijn, ze handelen er ook naar. Ik mag dat wel.

Binnenstad

Elke keer als ik in de binnenstad kom, (wat dus ongeveer eens per jaar was, als ik in het land was) dan was er wel iets nieuws. Ineens stond er een gigantisch flatgebouw naast het station, een andere keer was het station van binnen ineens helemaal verbouwd. Kroegjes komen en gaan, en winkels komen en gaan. Wat tof is is dat de Blob altijd blijft. Je kan hem lelijk vinden of niet, iconisch is hij zeker.

Reëel gezien moeten we erkennen dat Strijp-S wel the place to be is inmiddels. Toen ik uit Nederland vertrok was dit een beetje een kunstenaar hoekje, waar het design gehalte zich qua arrogantie zich wel heel erg drukte in sfeer.

Inmiddels is dit wel echt anders. Er zijn zoveel woningen daar inmiddels gecreëerd in oude Philips fabrieken,, en ook zoveel kroegjes en restaurantjes dat Strijp-S een welkome plek voor iedereen is. Ik verwachtte veel van het Veemgebouw wat als een soort foodcourt zou moeten gaan fungeren, maar dit concept lijkt toch een klein beetje mislukt. Je kan niet alles hebben toch ;)

Evenementen

Glow

Al zo lang als ik me kan herinneren glossiert Eindhoven in het organiseren van evenementen. Een van de redenen daarvoor kan wel eens zijn dat Eindhoven niet een super mooie historie of super mooie gebouwen hebben. Daardoor moet de stad het hebben van andere dingen en dat doen ze wel echt heel erg goed.

Glow festival is een jaarlijks terugkerend evenement in de herfst waar meer dan een miljoen mensen op af komen. Lichtkunst in de lichtstad, het lijkt eigenlijk wel een naturel combinatie en dat is het ook. Het enige waar je wellicht op af kan knappen is dat het echt wel heel erg druk is in de binnenstad. Kies een doordeweekse dag om te gaan, zou mijn advies zijn.

Ben je student en hou je van volleyballen? Of hou je gewoon willekeurig van een feestje? Dan heeft volleybalvereniging Hajraa echt iets voor jou in het wereldwijde grootste grasvolleybaltournooi. Meer dan 100 velden, meer dan 5000 mensen, meer dan 10.000 liter bier

Echt iets om een keer mee te maken als je van het spelletje houdt.

Ik maak een grap natuurlijk. ;) Maar toch, ook al heb je niks met voetbal. Stel er is een kampioensfeestje gaande, dan moet je toch gewoon effe gaan joh, hartstikke leuk!

Al met al

Genoeg te doen in en om omgeving Eindhoven. Nu heb ik het nog niet eens gehad of musea of de Dutch Design week of de stadsschouwburg, maar die dingen zijn er natuurlijk ook allemaal. Ik vermaak me hier altijd prima en dat kun jij ook doen. Het is bijna jammer om weer te vertrekken haast zou ik zeggen ;)

By now my departure from the Southern part of Holland to go to a more Southern part of Europe is getting closer and closer. Eindhoven is one of the places in the Netherlands that I can truly call home. I spend most of my years here, and thats why I call it ‘my city’ by now.

What is so nice to see about Eindhoven is that so much changes every time that I visit here. They really want to profile themselves this way, that it is an innovative city and that they want to move forward. These are not just hollow words. They really are making an effort to stand out and I think they are really doing a good job.

Every time when I enter the inner city (which used to be about once a year when I was in the country) there seems to be something new. All of a sudden there was a gigantic flat next to the train station which is a student hotel as they call it, the next time I was there the whole train station had an entire makeover. Bars seems to be coming and going and also shops and stores seem to shift a lot. What I like is that the Blob is always here. You can love it or hate it, it is a typical Eindhoven icon.

If we are honest, we have to say that Strijp-S is THE place to be by now. When I left Holland a couple of years ago this was a bit of the arty-farty corner of the city. Design was taking over there but also the arrogance that a lot of design artists bring with them was taking over. Not how it supposed to be.

By now this has totally changed. A lot of living places are created in old Philips factories and it also has a gigantic amount of bars and restaurants. I expected a lot of the Veem-building in the position of being a food court, but this concept did not work out entirely. You cant have it all right?

For as long as I can remember Eindhoven is the winner in organizing big events. One of the reasons for this is that Eindhoven does not have the most beautiful buildings of the most fantastic history. It has other qualities and having major events is one of them.

Glow is an annual light art festival in the fall and more than a million people attend it every year. Light art in the city of light, it sounds like a logic combination right? One of the things that might bring you down is the amount of people that walk around every day. My advice would be to not go in weekends, that will save you a lot of stress.

Are you a student and do you like to play volleyball? Or you just like to go to a party? Volleybalclub Hajraa organises the biggest grass volleyball tournament every year and it is a blast. More than 100 playing fields, more than 5000 people, more than 10.000 liters of beer.
This is something you really should attend once in your life if you are into the game.

PSV’s annual championship party… Im just kidding, of course they do not become champions every year, but when they do...and you are in town…. just go :)

All in all, there is enough to do in the city of Eindhoven. And I did not even talk about museums or the Dutch Design Week or the cultural expositions. I always have a great time in Eindhoven and so can you. It is almost a pity to leave I would say ;)
