Wooden pillars on Madaras-Harghita, Transsylvania, Romania

The Madaras-Hargita (in Romanian: Harghita-Mădăraş) is the northern remain of the highest peak of the Harghita Mountains and Szeklerland (Székelyföld), the edge of a former crater. The other mountain peaks of the crater are the Oltárkő (1358 m), Rákosi-Hargita (1755 m), Madéfalvi-Hargita (1709 m) and Csicsói-Hargita (1756 m). They form one of the largest volcanic remains in the Eastern Carpathians.

The width of the former crater is 5 km. From the south, the longest river of Harghita is Vargyas Stream. Old names of Madarasi-Harghita: Galus-tető, Nagy Harghita, Havas, Nagy-Havas, Nagyerdő.

From the huts, the peak is about an hour's walk, and there is no steep section. It's worth it to go for a tour if weather permits, because it is unavoidable. Much has been said that there was no one in Szeklerland who did not go to the Holy Mountain. We also stop on the road to the summit, admiring the gradually expanding panorama. At the top, the spectacle is unique, almost "all over Transylvania" lies before our feet. The unbelievable panorama can not be forgotten. Walking on the hilltop, another feeling is in the power of the man ... The mystic mood of the place is enhanced by the smaller and larger stone mounds and stone inscriptions on the roof, as well as the crosses and the wooden pillars. Perhaps we can not make a statement, but who has been here once in a while, will surely understand why this place is for the Szeklers.
