BoldspiritTravels on a budget: a brief look at Cartagena’s film festival 2015, Colombia #3 [Solo backpacking on a budget in Latin America]

Hi guys!

I have already mentioned in my previous post that while I was in Cartagena de Indias (in Colombia) a film festival took place. It was all over the place!

I am a cinema lover and I regret I only participated in one film festival. It was a while ago, in Wroclaw in Poland. It was called “the New Horizons Independent Film Festival” - one of the most important cinematographic events in Poland. It screens independent and artistic movies from all over the world and lasts around 10 days. I was there with my friends so we rented an apartment and were watching films from early in the morning till the late hours! We drunk a lot of... coffee ;) in order to be able to stay focused during the whole time. Some movies were not masterpieces, but that fact should not be disappointing and discouraging - after all, you get to see films from all around the world that often are low-cost productions and / or debuts. One thing is certain - you are given an opportunity to discover a lot of new “lands” in short amount of time!

Cartagena International Film Festival (Festival Internacional de Cine de Cartagena de Indias (FICCI))

I had a pleasure to witness 55th Cartagena International Film Festival. This festival is the oldest film festival in the whole Latin America!! That’s pretty awesome! You can read about this year’s project on their website: www.ficcifestival.com.

The Great thing about 2015 edition was that all the screenings and accompanying events like workshops and panels were for free, both for inhabitants and tourists! Each year there are some international stars invited, like Darren Aronofsky - extremely talented director with a unique way of storytelling. Unfortunately, I didn’t run into him. 😅 which to me is a proof that the world is not a just place. ;) 😅

The screenings took place in variety of public places, from the iconic the Teatro Adolfo Mejía, to public squares, to local University.

Unfortunately I could only spend two days in Cartagena as I was heading further to Santa Marta where I wanted to do my scuba diving “PADI Open Water” Certificate. As I have already written in my previous posts I truly fell in love with this stunning city so I decided I wanted to explore it as much as I can instead of watching films. So instead of going to the bars/parties, I spent my two consecutive evenings watching films. :) Both nights were super interesting. First one mostly because of the place of the screening - Teatro Adolfo Mejía.

Teatro Adolfo Mejía

Constructed on the ruins of Iglesia Merced in 1625, Teatro Adolfo Mejia was built to celebrate the first centenary of the Colombian Republic in 1911. Notably, it was designed and built by the same architect who conceived the equally splendid Clocktower. (...) Between 1988 and 1998, the theatre was closed for a full renovation, restoring it to its pristine original beauty. The theatre is stunningly outfitted and features, on the ceiling, a glorious fresco painted by Cartagena’s most renowned artist, Enrique Grau, depicting the dance of the nine muses of the arts. With a capacity of 650, the theatre is a regular host to most of the city’s classical music concerts, film premiers, literary readings and theatre troupes.

The second evening was completely different. A movie was being screened in a public square. It was equally packed, but the sound wasn’t too good and I had a place far from the screen. The movie itself wasn’t too interesting. But what I enjoyed the most was the atmosphere. Unfortunately, my photos from both evening are embarrassingly terrible, so you must forgive me that. 😅

Pura Vida and enjoy your journey! 💛

Some of my recommendations:

Sort:

The cinema is part of our culture every day, of our personal life, of our biography, something that is essential for us, some inexpensive and others not, some fictitious and others real but with the same purpose try to take half of a screen something that can become an unforgettable experience.

i liked your comment, thank you :)

Was für ein geiles Theater, klasse!
