Italian Road Trip #13 - Cliffside Corniglia
Hey, fellow Steemians!
We continued our Cinque Terre tour by taking a train from Manarola to Corniglia. Being the smallest and least accessible of all five villages, Corniglia wasn’t as crowded or touristy so we were very excited about exploring it.
When we got off the train we were welcomed by what seemed to be an endless stairway that connected the station with the town. The climb was a bit wearing but it offered some interesting views of the railroad and the sea.
Unlike Riomaggiore and Manarola which we visited previously, Corniglia has a different kind of charm. It lies on a cliff without a direct access to the sea, so it has more of a rural feel than the fishing village feel.
The alleys are more like a maze and don’t converge to a wharf or a central street. Though, it’s hard to get lost because the town is so small. In whichever direction we went the path would eventually swing left or right and we’d get to a familiar spot. Scattered around were several tiny piazzas where people could relax, drink a coffee or eat a gelato.
Speaking of gelato, we felt like it was a great time to refresh ourselves with one so we tried Alberto Gelateria which served pretty interesting flavors like lemon and basil.
After indulging ourselves in this sweet Italian masterpiece, we continued up until we came upon a small church followed by a large terrace. There are actually several interesting viewpoints in Corniglia providing an amazing panorama of the coast and the sea. But at this one, we were all by ourselves!
The plan for the rest of the afternoon was to hike to Vernazza so we spent some time here just relaxing and enjoying the view in order to recharge our batteries.
Thank you for reading! Join us in the next post to see more about Cinque Terre!
I like the balcony with yellow walls, green windows and red flower pots. Really beautiful <3
Thank you! Indeed, these villages are so colorful! :)
Wow, so many stairs! These people must be very healthy!
A lovely and peaceful place to walk around and so close to nature! No skyscrapers!!
All 5 villages of Cinque Terre look as if they were stuck in time. It's such an amazing feeling to stroll around and breathe in the spirit of Italy.
