The Last Supper was...Guinea Pig!
Did you know while in Cusco, you can see a large painting of the "Last Supper" depicting Jesus and his disciples are dining on a Peruvian delicacy, guinea pig?
The painting was created in 1753 by Marcos Zapata, and today stands in the Cathedral Basilica, in the colonial Plaza de Armas.
You can't miss the cooked guinea pig, lying paws up on a plate in the center of the table. Guinea pigs are native to Peru and can still be found today on many restaurant menus in Cusco. I was told, its eaten or special occasions, such as Birthdays. (it’s also eaten in Ecuador, Bolivia & Colombia)
We saw many menu's that had cut (guinea pig) for purchase, but we didn't order it, however it is known that cut is nutrient rich, high in protein and low in cholesterol and fat. Would you try it?
