More Travels in the Two Harbors and Duluth Area!

in #travel7 years ago (edited)

Today's day trip along the Lake Superior shore to Two Harbors was fun. Like Duluth, Two Harbors grew from the iron mining industry and still has ore docks for loading trainloads of taconite onto cargo ships for delivery to manufacturing centers elsewhere on the Great Lakes.

First stop: The breakwater near the Two Harbors Lighthouse. While I typically advocate visiting local museums, we felt like taking a stroll down the breakwater outside instead.

We did stop at the Depot Museum as well. Again, we chose not to visit in favor of staying outside, but they had another Yellowstone locomotive like the one in the Lake Superior Railroad Museum outside, allowing proper photography of the whole thing unlike at the museum I visited before. This location doesn't allow public access to the cab though. I have another panorama shot attempt and several shots from front and rear angles.

They also had another classic steam locomotive from an earlier era outside as well, with several other early rail vehicles in display with it under another shelter. I also need to point out the fierce-looking bouncer guarding the gift shop door too.

On our drive home, we took the old highway 61 scenic route. There were several places to pull over and take pictures or access the shoreline, and I must recommend the sandwiches at Tom's Logging Camp. The bread was from a local baker, the meat is sliced there to serve, the portions are generous, and the proprietor is quite chatty and personable if you catch him at a quiet time of day for business.

Capping it all off, we headed down to Canal Park in Duluth next to the Aerial Lift Bridge. Shopping, food, beer, recreation, and more museums abound here. Hopefully, tomorrow will include a tour of the SS William A Irvin. If so, more photos will follow.

Thanks for letting us visit parts of Minnesota through your posts :D That ship looks huge!

It is large, although i am curious to see what they have to say. Newer vessels are bigger.

Sounds like a good time.
Impressive seeing those old locomotives isn't it?
Raw fucking power.

Great post! How do you organize these pictures next to eachother, what html command? I am pretty new but I write about cryptocurrencies and will write about my travels to Japan, South Korea & Taiwan. I had some success with posts, especially 1 but I rather have a following than a good payout. Keep on doing what you do! <3

Let's see if I can properly show the code.

Multiple image links can be set in each division bracket. Don't forget to leave a blank line between the code and the images. It's easy to do it wrong, so take your time making sure the preview looks right first.

Thanks a lot!

I would like to visit Minnesota

I advise NOT visiting during July or August, unless you enjoy heat and humidity rivalling that of the Deep South. The end of September and into October isn't too hot or too cold. May is usually good. And, of course, winter is not good unless you like bitter cold and blowing snow. This June trip has been superb for weather, although it was a gamble.

Absolutely. May and June really are the best. The weather is still cool enough, and the bugs haven't come out yet.

Nice photos of museums . I also love to visit such places. Thanks for sharing.

Love the blue sea :)

It is actually the largest freshwater lake in the world.

Like Gordon Lightfoot sang, "the big lake they called 'gitche gumee'".

I will post about my tour of the Fitzgerald's sister ship ASAP. And I will link the song when I do.
