Iloilo is a province caught in the Western Visayas part of Philippines. Here we had a sidetrip on our way to Puerto Princesa Palawan via Cebu Pacific (local airline company). The calculated flying distance from Cebu City to Iloilo is equal to 94 miles which is equal to 151 km. Since we still had a couple of hour before our flight to Palawan, we decided to take a short city tour.

Just a walking distant from the airport of Iloilo there they have there native restaurants where you can try their native foods. One that caught my attention is the Jera's tinuom restaurant. It looks so native, cozy and built of bamboo trees which makes it more Filipino style.

I personally believe that the purpose of travelling is to try something different so I tried their specialty food which is called "Tinu-om". You shouldn't leave the province without trying this for it taste differently than you thought.

Tinu-om is a native dish of the Cabatuanons is made up of native chicken seasoned with onions, tomatoes and lemon grass(tanglad) wrapped in banana leaves. It is served with broth that builds up inside its wrapping following a heavy steaming. Tinu-om in native language means “balot”, so Tinu-om na Manok means binalot na manok.

Of course, after filling the stomach in, you get the energy to kick in for adventures and let me bring you to one of Iloilo's tourist attraction. The 'Angelicum School" formerly known as Villa Lizares Mansion.

The elegant mansion is a mixture of American & Spanish architecture. Built in 1937 by Don Emiliano Lizares for his wife Conchita Gamboa and their two sons and three daughters. When the World War II broke out, the family chose to leave for a safe hiding place in Pototan, Iloilo. It was then used as headquarters of the Japanese soldiers. It was believed that the basement became a dumping ground for tortured Filipinos. After the war, the family went back to live in the mansion, but life was never the same.

In 1962-1963 the Lizares Mansion was sold to the Dominicans and was converted into a House of Formation for young Dominicans in the Philippines. It became the home of Angelicum School Iloilo in 1978.

I wasn't able to enter the mansion for the priest are unavailable no one can accomodate. Though I killed the time by stealing photos. Here are some of the photos taken.

It is said that it's better to visit the Mansion during Christmas for it will be lighten up with too many Christmas lights.

How to Get There

The Lizares Mansion is located along McArthur Drive in Tabuc Suba, Jaro, Iloilo City. It can easily be reached by both taxis and these jeepney routes: Jaro Liko, Leganes La Paz, or Leganes Hi-way. Remember to tell the driver to drop you off at Angelicum, since it is more known for the school. To get to the front lawn, you need to ask permission from the guard and tell them that you want to take photos. Prior notice is needed if you want to go inside the mansion.
