Hawaii - Spouting Horn Beach Park - Kauai Rainbow from the ground spout - legend of lizard who blows out this spout

My friend is in Kauai and sent this gem of a photo on the South Shore.

Hawaiian legend says in folklore that giant lizard once protected this area of the island. A boy named Liko challenged the visitor because he was preventing people from coming there to enjoy themselves or fish for food.

Liko stabbed a stick into the lizard’s mouth and went into the ocean, dragging the lizard in the water. Liko went into a lava tube in the rocks that would get him back to the surface. The lizard was dragged and chased Liko in the tube, but got stuck in the tube, (or blowhole). Today, you hear the lizard’s roar when the Spouting Horn Blowhole blasts into the air. That is how the legend goes. I like stuff like this.

This site is apparently one of the most visited places in Kauai. I can see why. I love the idea of the folklore story and the natural beauty; shown yet again during such destruction happening in the area from volcanic eruptions. It is just amazing and enlightening how powerless we actually are against nature. Enjoy!
