Attractions of Halong Bay #15 Tuan Chau Island

This rock island to the southwest of Halong city has become one of the biggest tourist areas in the whole of Halong Bay. Tuan Chau covers an area of about 2.2 square kilometres and is covered in pine forest. There are two manmade beaches that boast beautiful white sand.

In Feudal times this was an old guard station and the name Tuan Chau comes from two other words: linh tuan meaning patrolman and tri chau meaning district chief. The island has many important archaeological sites dating from 5,000 years ago. The father of modern day Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh, used to regular holiday here.

The island is now connect to the mainland by a 2 kilometre road, which facilitates easy access. It was constructed in 1998 by the 5 star Tuan Chau Yacht Company. It is also now possible to fly here from Hanoi by seaplane.

The island has many attractions including dolphins, sealions and an animal circus; not exactly ethical in todays’ climate, but much loved by the locals. There are a group of restaurants serving the guests who are housed in villas around the well stocked lake, and guesthouses.
