Bijapur, the ninth-largest city in the South Indian state of Karnataka. Ibrahim Adil Shah II ruled the kingdom of Bijapur from 1580 to 1627. He is reputed to be one of the most compassionate and multicultural rulers in history and was a generous patron of the arts.

Ibrahim Rauza is another valuable and most stylish architectural example of the Adil Shahi style of architecture. Ibrahim Adil Shah II, one of the sultans of this dynasty, developed and organized his own final resting place.

The meaning of the word Rauza is said to be tomb and the name is given to the structure because it houses the tomb of Ibrahim Adil Shah II of Adil Shahi dynasty. The structure is also famous in the name Ali Rauza in Bijapur. This beautiful building was constructed in the first half of the 17th century, according to the historical records. This beautiful as well as huge structure of Bijapur dynasty contains the tombs of Ibrahim Adil Shah II, the fifth king of the dynasty and his wife Taj Sultana. When the structure was started to construct, it was planned to make the tomb of queen Taj Sultana. Tombs of Ibrahim Adil Shah II’s two sons and mother are also located within the fine square structure built on the right side of the Ibrahim Rauza. There is a common believe that the structure was an inspiration for Shajahan to construct the world famous Taj Mahal in Agra.

Architecture of Ibrahim Rauza

Indo Islamic architecture is used for the construction of Ibrahim Rauza. The monument featured in beautifully decorated location with trees and plants around, was designed by a Persian architect called Malik Sandal. The monument has two square shaped structures with delicate carvings on it. The first square structure constitute of the tombs of Ibrahim Adil Shah II and his wife Taj Sultana. The second square shaped structure houses the mosque in Ibrahim Rauza. The tomb of the architect of Ibrahim Rauza, Malik Sandal is also visible within the courtyards of the structure.

Ibrahim Rauza consists of two core constructions: a tomb and a mosque with several smaller structures. All these buildings are built within a square enclosure with an attractive garden in the front. Both the structures are built on a platform that is 360 feet long and 160 feet wide, around a walled enclosure.
