DTube - Blue Lagoon & Tham Phu Kham Cave - Vang Vieng, Laos
First of all, if you didn't already know, Laos is a very beautiful country. Being the only landlocked country in Southeast Asia, it is home to beautiful mountains, lush rainforests, rice paddies, and lovely people.

Vang Vieng is one of the towns with the most stunning scenery in the country, surrounded by limestone karsts with a river running through it. It's the stuff dreams and movies and dream movies are made of.
Being so small, it attracts a large number of tourists, especially backpackers. It used to be known as a party town with the backpacker-famous tubing pub crawl where young people would hop from one river bar to the other on inflated inner tubes. After some deaths occurred as a result of that, they put stricter regulations on the activity to make it less dangerous. It can still be done but don't expect the rope swings to go along with it.

There are quite a few activities to do around the town. It is centered around tourism now. One of the most popular things to do is go to the Blue Lagoon about 7 kms out of town. You can rent a bicycle like my brother and I did. You can also rent a motor scooter or just take a taxi out to it.
The road to get there is breathtaking. Surrounded by towering karsts and farmers working their rice paddies. It felt like I was in a movie.

Just follow the signs to the Blue Lagoon. At the same site is a cave called Tham Phu Kham. It's free to enter and fun see. If you want to go deep into it be sure to bring a good light.

The Blue Lagoon is basically just a slow-moving river that has an amazing blue color in the dry season. We went in the wet season so it was more green. There are rope swings, a slide and a big tree to jump off of into the cool, deep water. If you're not a confident swimmer, life jackets can be rented. Drinks and snacks are sold there so you can spend as much time there as you like. It makes for a great half day adventure. What I recommend while you are out there is to go a little further along the road where you can climb up one of the karst mountains you have been gawking at all day. I knew the Blue Lagoon just from Malta since I read your post.
Maybe it was the best decision for you two to take the bike.. Its much more impressive to see the nature in this way than out of a car!

Heck yeah I'd jump off. I jumped off of a 50 ft waterfall before. It didn't end well, though. It ended with me borrowing butt cream from a Costa Rican grandma. lol don't ask.

Cool video! Sounds like great fun! :D I haven't been to Vang Vieng yet, only to the Luang Prabang region, but the views look like the Karst landscape in southwest China and north Vietnam. =)
Luang Prabang is awesome too. Yeah, the karsts are normal to see in Asia. I've seen them in Thailand, China, Vietnam, Philippines... I never get tired of them.
