Travelling with a toddler - Part 1

in #travel7 years ago (edited)

My wife Anna and I have a noisy and clumsy cute baby, Adam, who will be 20 months old when we start our new bad decision adventure: travelling around Europe for 2 months.

Meet Adam

This is not the first time we do something like that. Right after he was born, precisely when he was 2 mo, we took a plane from my hometown (Rio, Brazil) to my wife's hometown (Wellington, New Zealand). But that's another story.

Our new trip will start in less than 2 week, so I am starting to panic a lot little bit. This series of posts is my way of venting out about my worries but also of helping other parents as stupid cool as us.

We are travelling with low budget and our plan is to rent AirBnb rooms as much as possible. It's not likely that our hosts will have a crib available for Adam, so we need to decide:

Where is he going to sleep?

First we thought of taking our portable cot that actually stays all the time at his grandma's house, where he sleeps once a week (yes, parents need a night out per week, at least!). The problem is that even a portable one is quite heavy (I will write about packing soon!) and also counts as extra luggage for each flight (which means around €40 extra for each flight)

Second option: he can sleep in bed with us. We tried a few nights at our place to check viability. It's impossible! He rolls over the whole night, pulls Anna's hair, play with my ears. Once he stuck his hand in my mouth and pulled my tongue out.

Well, another possibility would be him sleeping on the floor on a mattress. But I know he will wake up before us and break everything he can reach.

Adam is messy!

That took us to some debate and Anna remembered she once bought a baby tent (which as a number of things she's bought, has never been used). And that's our final call:

The baby cage

If anyone can help us and suggest something else, please do! We are not 100% confident this will work!
