A Visit to Water Jail (dungeon) in Srirangapatna, Mysore

in #travel7 years ago (edited)

This undergrown prison was built by Tipu Sultan to keep war prisoners. Tipu Sultan used to imprison all the British officers. One British officer died in this prison during his sentence so it is named after him Bailey's Dungeon.

The dungeon is about 30 meters X 12 meters. There are shoulder height stones fixed inside the prison of different heights. Prisoners were chained to these stone slabs and cold water is filled inside the jail up to chin height so prisoners could basically never sleep. This was to torture prisoners.

Here I am trying to display how prisoners chained

I was informed by the guide how prisoners kept in this dungeon and tried to put myself in place of the prisoner, It can realize how painful it would have become for prisoners when they chained and jail filled with cold water.

This place was just a part of our Srirangapatna visit but I can not forget it that how prisoners are used to torture from ancient time in a different way.

God that sounds aweful. I have been to Mysore twice but seemed to have missed this place. But I am glad I missed it. It would have been traumatic for me. Thanks to you I know about the place without actually visiting.

Civilization has really come a long way. May we never slide back to the days of such barbarity
