Interesting article. After the crusades the Templars developed into the first organised "bank", which lent out money to the kings. They were destroyed by the French king because they did not want to lend more money - he had a habit of not paying his debt.
The Hospitalers created the first hospitals. They also disband when the Templars were destroyed, but was later created again as the St Johns movement which provides medical care.
