Kraków Old Town walk - don't miss something awesome

in #travel5 years ago (edited)

Kraków's Old Town is just filled with historical sites and I don't won't you to miss it while you are here.

If I walk a friend who has never been in Kraków I am usually starting from Main Railway Station area and then we going towards the Old Town through Planty Park, and see beautiful Juliusz Słowacki Theatre (2nd oldest theatre in Kraków).
While walking along the Old Town walls, take a look at Barbican, and go through the gate(Brama Floriańska) and along Floriańska street to Kościół Mariacki - Saint Marys Church - to pray a little bit inside, see the interior and take a look at stunning main altar.

Walk around Main Market Square, see Cloth Hall - Sukiennice, Town Hall Tower - Wieżę Ratuszową, hear the Hejnał Mariacki - St. Mary's Trumpet Call(every round hour played from tower on St Marys Church).

Next thing - go through Grodzka street on a Wawel hill , and stop by Baroque style St Peter and St Paul’s Church church(next to it there is XI century church).

While visiting Wawel complex it's a must to see Wawel Cathedral with Sigismund's Chapel - considered to be the pearl of Renaissance architecture outside of Italy. Plenty of important figures in polish history has a resting place there below and next to Cathedral. This place used to be coronation site for polish monarchs while Kraków was the capital of Poland.

Next thing would be sculpture of legendary Dragon(preferable to go there downstairs and through Dragon's Den with ticket). Wait a little bit a to see him throwing flames.

Further walk I would lead to the right around the Wawel, then through Planty Park up to Franciszkańska - Bishop's Palace in Kraków with window where Pope used to speak for youth while visiting Kraków.

Another interesting spot is a little bit further along Planty - Collegium Novum and especially Collegium Maius not far away. Those are buildings belonging to the Jagiellonian University - established 1364(where Nicolaus Copernicus and John Paul II have studied).

That would be pretty basic program for a walk. In addition: you might visit Archaeological Museum(Senacka street next to Planty) with its very nice garden. At Sunday it's free of charge.
