5 things you probably don’t know about China

in #travel6 years ago (edited)

1. Foreign tourists can apply for urgent visa within 1 hour

This is applicable for foreign tourists who lose their passports and need their visa reissued. This is on the basis that you have an explanation letter, and transport ticket (train, plane, boat) is booked. The process that usually takes 7 days can now be done within an hour.

2. Alibaba wants to hire more foreign talents

Yes. The giant e-commerce platform company launched its global academy program, incubating some of the best and bright minds from top MBA courses in the world. The company is looking for international talents who have worked abroad. Check out their website for more info

3. The New York Times is banned in China

Not just NYT, but also Australian Broadcasting Corporation, Bloomberg, The Wall Street Journal, CNN’s TV broadcaast. There are several well known news organizations that failed China’s vast censorship tool, The Great Firewall. So if you want to get access to news outside China, get a VPN.

4. China banned cryptocurrency transaction, but allows development of blockchain technology.

News has reported that Wechat, Chinese main chatting app in China is developing a system to report cryptocurrency to the Police. Tencent, the Chinese tech Giant behind Wechat has reportedly created a model which monitors and report about any virtual currency transaction to the authorities.

5. Taxi App allows audio recording for safety purposes

Didi Chuxing, China's largest online car-hailing platform, launched an in-car audio recording function on its app on Saturday as part of improved safety measures in the wake of the murders of two female passengers by drivers since May.

Now, passengers are obligated to agree the activation of in-car audio recording for safety reason and will only be allowed to order a car if they click the agree button. The new function comes with six other safety measures that allows emergency one-click call to the police.

That's all from me, see you next time

Very interesting and useful.

Thanks @asianetwork

I'm glad you like this article

Thank you for sharing us some facts about China

Cool facts, @asianetwork@! I like the idea of that taxi recording app, but that's a total bummer with the cryptocurrency. Thanks for sharing these tidbits!

I wasn't aware that WeChat now snitched on cryptocurrency. I actually wasn't aware it had been banned here either. All I knew was that they banned mining it (citing the vast energy expenditure).
...It's very telling that they allow the development of a technology that they deem too dangerous to allow the usage of.

its the latest news, another additional info, besides the bank, the police can freeze your bank account if they suspect any transaction related to cryptocurrency

WOW!
China has the Great Wall... and the GREAT FIRE WALL?

yup... the Great firewall is very famous too. come prepared when u visit mainland China😂

how stupid is to "ban" cryptos and at the same time let crypto tech to come up!

I know right? it's like you can't touch coffee but you can take caffeine stuff.

The Chinese government wants to protect the currency and control the flow of money, its a way to prohibit some upper ppl to launder money and send them abroad

hahaha like the ones that wanna launder money aren't doing it anyways :P

It's fascinating to see a glimpse of a different culture. Thank you for sharing. Here in the US we see China as being a very watched country. As in, the citizens aren't really free to do what they might want to do. How much truth is there to that? These 5 things seem to support it, but it's always hard to tell what a culture feels like when you are on the outside looking in.
