Mumyalanmış Bir Filozof: Jeremy Bentham / The Mummified Philosopher

Jeremy Bentham felsefe tarihinde utilitarizm (yararcılık) ekolünün savunucularındandır. Temel olarak etik çerçevesinde insan davranışlarının ahlaki değerini incelemiş, doğru ve yanlış yönleri üzerinde durmuştur. Bentham’a göre bir eylemin değeri, öncelikli olarak bu eylemin yararıyla ölçülmelidir. Ölçüsü ise mutluluk sağlama ve acıyı hafifletme amacı üzerinden belirlenir. Yani toplumun tümü için en yüksek oranda iyiyi sağlayacak olan eylemi tercih etmeye dayanır. Böylece bir eylemin yararı, bu eylemin sonunda ortaya çıkacak sonuca göre belirlenir. Bentham yararcılık kuramını öylesine içselleştirmiştir ki, kendi yaşamı ve ölümü üzerinde dahi kullanmıştır.

Öyle ki, ölümünden bir hafta önce vasiyetine garip bir madde ilave ederek yeniden düzenlemiştir. Vasiyetinde, aynı zamanda yakın arkadaşı olan doktoruna koruma amacıyla bedenini bırakmak istemiştir. Bentham’ın isteği, bedeninin önce tıp fakültesindeki bir anatomi dersinde parçalara ayrılması, sonra yeniden bir iskelet olarak bir araya getirilip, kendisiyle özdeşleşmiş olan siyah takım elbise giydirilerek bir sandalyeye oturtulup kamuya açık bir sergiye yerleştirilmesidir.

Doktoru, arkadaşının bu vasiyeti üzerine şaşırmış olsa da isteğini yerine getirmiştir. Bir anatomi dersinde bedeni parçalara ayırmış ve dersten sonra iskeletini toplayarak şuan halen sergilenmekte olan Londra Üniversitesi Akademisi’ne bağışlanıncaya kadar ahşap bir dolabın içinde muhafaza etmiştir.Bentham’ın bedeninin muhafaza işlemi sırasında kafatasının şeklinin bozulması sebebiyle balmumundan bir kafatasıyla değiştirilmiştir. Orijinal kafatası ise önce ayakucunda sergilenmiş daha sonra kaldırılmıştır.

ENGLISH VERSION

Jeremy Bentham is an advocate of utilitarianism in the history of philosophy. Basically, he examines the ethical value of human behavior in the frame of ethics, focus on right and wrong things. According to Bentham, the value of an action must be measured primarily with the benefit of this action. The measure is determined by the aim of more happiness and less pain. In other words, it is based on choosing the action that will provide the best for the whole community. Thus, the benefit of an action is determined by the outcome that will eventually occur.

Bentham has so internalized the theory of utilitarianism that he has even used his own life and death. So, a week ago before his death he rearranged his will by adding a strange clause to his it. In his will, he wanted to leave his body for protection for his doctor who also his close friend. Bentham's request is that the body should first be divided into pieces in an anatomy lesson in the medical faculty, then put back together as a skeleton, dressed in a black suit identified with himself, placed in a chair and placed in a public display.

The doctor was amazed at the will of his friend, but he did. In an anatomy class he divided the body into pieces and collected the skeleton after class and kept it in a wooden cabinet until donated to the Academy of London University which is body still presenting.
Bentham's body was replaced by a skull from the wax, due to the deterioration of the shape of the skull during the preservation process. The original skull is exhibited at the foot on the floor.
