Picture Albums Or Memory Books for Those With Alzheimers

When we get older we start to loose our memories or we are not just as sharp anymore. Those who has Alzheimer have it worse. It is a disease that no cure has been found yet, (even if there are claims of cures). But we can make the prognosis go slower.
They say pictures say a thousand words, but for those with the disease, it says more than a thousand words. They are usually living in the past. They can barely remember the present and the recent past.
So when they look at pictures, sometimes a memory flashes through their minds. Sometimes they may ask. They will also try to remember by themselves.

Giving the picture albums can really help them a lot. Talking to them too and listening to their stories helps. It makes it easier for them. Don't force them to remember. Just let them go slowly.
My sister-in-law found a better way to give my mom picture albums. She had them made by Shutterstock I think. She made them into books. I like it better because it is easier for my mom.
She can also have some words or sayings written in them. Also less chance of losing the pictures or fading.

This was the first she made, sort of trial and error, for my mom's 88th birthday. But it was good.

This was on her 90th birthday. We have the regular picture album but this is better, there is less chance of losing a picture and can fit more. She became more creative in making it.

Since they came home last month she brought this as a birthday present for her 92nd birthday. More creative and expert in making it. Better arrangement and more info.

She is asking me for the old pictures so I will look for them again. So far they had made 3 for my mom. I think she also made one for her mom because she is also starting to be forgetful. But ours is easier we are only 4 in the family and 4 grandchildren. They have a lot. I hope she can make one of the older pictures.

When you open it is magazine paper type. Thick and can not be easily torn, glossy and creative.
The pictures are clear too along with the words.

As you can see, she has placed the names of her children date of birth and who they married. Also their children. She also adds little notes on the happenings.

My mom can sit for hours looking through the picture books or memory books as I call them. She would sometimes ask for verification if what is written is true.
She would also get teary-eyed if she can not remember or if she misses one of the children or grandchildren.

If you can"t afford this (I'm glad my brother can), just use a regular album and write notes in them or put pieces of paper with some information. You can also be creative add some drawings, sticker, other pictures or ribbons and lace.

Then give to your parents or whoever you think needs them. A little creativity goes a long way. They will also be grateful for it. My mom reads hers over and over again. These can be good birthday or Christmas presents.

It is our way of helping them, making life a little easier for them. Giving back a little of their lost memories. They will be grateful for it even if they can not tell you. But seeing the spark in their eyes and the smiles when they remember is the best reward, Someday they can be yours too. If taken good care, it will last a long time and can be passed down.
