A North Korean mother has been threatened with jail after saving her two children from a
house fire but allowing portraits of North Korea's leaders to burn. The woman has been placed under investigation by the country's Ministry of State Security after a fire broke out in a home shared by two families in Onsong County, North Hamgyong Province, close to the Chinese border. Both sets of parents were out at the time the fire started, but raced back to save their families after seeing smoke. In the process, one set of portraits was destroyed. North Korea demands that every home display paintings of its past leaders, Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il, and sends inspectors to ensure that they do. If found guilty, the mother is facing a lengthy prison sentence with hard labour.

Insane...

The communist dictatorship is no different from any dictatorship in history.

Not surprised at all. We saw it when Jong-il died with the theatrical expressions of sorrow.
Countries like North Korea make any speculative fiction writer look silly. Reality outdoes fiction.
There is a documentary by Spanish journalists that shows the ridiculous extent to which blind veneration of a leader can take people.
In all dictatorships iconography is key. In Venezuela the abusive and imposing use of images from chavez, maduro and some historical figures was already getting to this level.
They combined this with religious impositions when they instituted Cuban Santeria as the revolution's official creed.
In public institutions it is obligatory to display portraits of at least chavez, maduro and Bolivar (intentional use of small letters in those bastards' last names).
When they realized that even their own people were voicing criticism in their workplace, they also instituted signs that read "aquí no se habla mal de chavez" (we do not badmouth chavez here).
Every time I go to a public institution I make sure I say something really offensive to their leader's alleged legacy.
I may die before I see what a free North Korea can be like. They are the most pathetic example of submission to a political, quasi religious ideology.

North Korea is a huge joke, I mean this is like practising some type of facism in my opinion. I definitely feel that Saving one's child over a painting is not just logical, it's reasonable as well as responsible and I generally feel that a woman facing jail term for saving her child is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard.
