What does it matter

in #thoughts5 years ago

It looks like at some point, I am going to have to get a second job. My wife is unable to work at this point due to her studies and my daughter legally can't being less than 2.5 years old so, the decision is pretty easy. I don't mind, work is part of this life and in mine, provides some purpose.

Since young it has always been my intention to work myself to death one way or another, no matter whether the money is needed or not. Many people want to retire, I want to be able to die doing what I love and when I consider what that is, it isn't watching TV or sitting on a beach somewhere.

Sure, I would rather not die doing some meaningless work full of drudgery but if the work serves a purpose, is it meaningless? We a individuals are the ones who apply meaning to our world and as I see it, if my actions provide opportunity to my family, there is purpose and utility in action. There are worse ways to die than working toward what one considers a better life.

People are quite negative when it comes to work, many seem to avoid it at all costs and the costs can be very high indeed. In many cases, it can cost the core of their purpose and meaning as rather than work toward what they consider important, they avoid the work it takes to get there and instead hope miracles happen.

I don't believe I these kinds of miracles, the kind where without action and intention desires are magically met. It is a reliance on external forces to provide and fulfil meaning. How important is our view if we aren't willing to work toward it ourselves?

This is how I see my work, whether it be here or there, it is a journey toward something more and no matter whether a goal is reached, the path is fulfilling with each action as it is in service to something larger than myself. Family, community, the future. No matter the work, when it is performed with intention abd purpose it can provide meaning.

A lot if people are stressing because of crypto prices and Steem being in the gutter but why, what are their intentions and does it matter? Money is a tool and like all resources, it isn't what one has but how one uses it that matters. Whether rich or poor intended actions matter to personal meaning and many seem to rely on a future of wealth to provide it while spending their current time waiting for it to come about. It may never.

We each live our own experience of this existence and if in our many moments we are not working toward a better version of ourselves, what is our purpose? If we can't find meaning in what we are doing now, what makes us think that if Steem goes to the moon it will be any different? To me it seems wasteful of resources to wait for a better world than to take and make steps toward one, it is a turning away from responsibility. To each their own.

I guess the difference in experience is that a life of purpose whether useful or not makes any work able to be suffered, no matter the type. For some that purpose is just to survive another day and they will lay their life on the line to try. It is interesting to consider what some will do to survive or provide for their families and what others are unwilling to do because they feel it beneath them. It is interesting to watch people live lives they do not enjoy yet are unwilling to do anything to change it, just wait for better times.

In my world, better times are a process of being able to work toward better times as if the investment isn't made, the realisation of what better actually is, is unlikely. Many are waiting in what others would consider the lap of luxury for better times while others are working hard to be in a similar position.

Life is about perspective and we each have our own expectations of what it should contain. Some want easy, some work hard toward it but does anyone find satisfactory meaning in waiting for a future that may never arrive?

Fuck, man, that sucks. The first thing that went through my head was you? - you work so much already, I mean you barely seem to get enough sleep. I hope you're really careful, don't exhaust yourself. Even if this second job thing is short term, don't push yourself over the limit, man, okay?

It would be okay and I can manage as long as I can keep myself healthy. It would likely mean posting less, giving up my paid delegation etc but change is as good as a holiday as they say :)

Well, I hope that's true and whatever the change, it does you well :)

I am sorry to hear this as well but know that like me, we need to do what is best for our families. I too have been thinking about striving for more at my current career just to take advantage of the opportunities available that will permit me to gain more financial independence sooner and more fiat to invest in my dreams here on Steem and Crypto. Although it is no longer what provides passion in my life, it has provided my family and me with plenty that I cannot be ungrateful for. Your words provide perspective for me and I hope the experiences you get will continue to inspire you to post and share here!

I think that the other factor is that with change comes new and unexpected opportunities and introductions so what could be considered difficult could flourish into something completely different given the right conditions. What I am hoping is that despite my likely need to take more of a step back from Steem, I will be able to get a little extra to invest directly also.

"We each live our own experience of this existence and if in our many moments we are not working toward a better version of ourselves, what is our purpose?"

I think this is a really important point. We tend to compare ourselves to others way more than we compare what we are today with who we were yesterday.

As long as you feel that today's version of you is just slightly better than the one yesterday, you are on the right path.

Small steps forward to greatness. People are looking for grand change when consistent changes is what gets them there.

Great attitude to have towards work. I retired early and have found it the most rewarding experience ever, as I get to raise my 7 year old daughter, and teach her about life, playing music, the stars & just do "fun dad" 5 countries over from my own.

Everyone has a different unique view on life and to each their own I say.

Good luck with the new job.

That is the thing with retiring, how one spends the time is important and can provide not only a great deal of personal meaning but also societal value. I know that looking after their granddaughter brings a massive amount of joy to my parent inlaws. They feel (and are) needed.

Superb, you have a long working road ahead, may you enjoy it to the fullest, it indeed helps when you do a job you like, as I found out many many moons ago.

Any ideas what you'll end up doing?

My observstion is that its systems/ institutions which can make work excellent or oppressive - like with teaching - the teachers/ students/ subject - all wonderful, but it was the systemic demands (results) which just made it unbearable.

However at my co-working space over summer everyone seemed to.enjoy working... I guess that's the power of working for yrself or as part of a small team.

At the moment there is one thing on the table that is in the training field (where I am now) but internally for a tech company. My hope is that I can maintain my company at the same time and take a hybrid approach but unsure if possible.

I love work, I love having a task or goal to work towards that keeps my hands and my mind busy. I think that it's vital for people to be active and motivated in life otherwise life can be long and depressing.

Providing for your family is far from meaningless and in fairness is one of the most important things that you can do in this life. It will be tough if you need to take up a second job but hopefully it will not be for the long term.

I work for now in a long and unrewarding job with the intention of not having to do that in the future. So it occurs to me that it is not meaningless as well if it helps me to achieve my goals of owning my own business or working in a more rewarding fashion.

it's vital for people to be active and motivated in life otherwise life can be long and depressing.

Depression is on the rise for various reasons and a lack of life purpose is one of them. Less jobs, less human connection, avoidance, less having families, less religious community, less social community... the list is long. People don't seem to want to recognise the personal value of working for others.

So it occurs to me that it is not meaningless as well if it helps me to achieve my goals of owning my own business or working in a more rewarding fashion.

This is how I see it. Some jobs are meaningful, some are a means to an end which serve a purpose in and of itself.

Hi taraz. i feel for you and obviously the pressure has been building up. I am sure whatever you have to do it will just cover for a short term. I was forced to do this years ago and moved form one job straight into the other working a straight 12 hours a day. You actually reminded me about those times and they weren't that bad in the end as it all worked out.

It will be okay if I must as it will still be a decision of choice, even though there is a need attached. I have worked very long hours for a long time so it just means redistributing the workload.

I have this non paying job with prisons that has almost every one in my small circle worried. They think I better get a paying one because I am struggling financially and to make the matters worse, 'that blockchain site I chose to blog on' doesn't pay me enough either. Sometimes I think they are right but most of them time, I want nothing more than to see a smile on a prisoner's face or that of a juvenile.

Soon I will have to make a solid decision though. Responsibilities sometimes can't let us have the pleasure of working for nothing. All the best with your hunt.

Err on the side of blockchain at least from a financial perspective in my opinion. But at the same time, doing something you find meaning in is important.

It's great that you are supporting your wife and it's just temporary anyway, correct?

But as you say, as long as you do something you enjoy, it doesn't matter. I think most people are negative about work because they hate what they're doing more than the benefits it brings to their lives (the reward). I used to be part of this group. Even though the good pay was supposed to lead me to a "better life", I was wasting precious time being miserable, time that will never come back, and just for the sake of money. I was always jealous of people who worked in a field they were passionate about, but it's not a reality for everyone to do that. If you choose something that you like, and that puts food on the table it does have purpose.

May I ask what kind of job you would be looking for? You should write articles for a magazine =)

Yes, it is just temporary but it might be more.

I think the same and they blame others instead of what led them to that work, themselves.

I was always jealous of people who worked in a field they were passionate about, but it's not a reality for everyone to do that.

I think if people honestly looked at theirwork they could find enjoyable pieces it is just that it is also surrounded by much less so. I believe that the hardest work one will ever do is in a field of passion as by definition, it is endlessly hungry.

I have no idea. I have been working for myself or by myself for the last 15 years pretty much so I am unsure what a 'job' is like :D at the moment there has to be a bit more security of income than the current situation.

Work in itself is a means of building character. I have not always worked at what I thought was a very meaningful job. The value of the work came from the abiliuty to provide for my family. As I moved forward in my life, work took on another purpose, that being helping others. As a teacher of the handicapped, both the intrinsic value as well as the monetary gain were both very rewarding.
If one has dreams there is only one way to get there, unless you were born with life being given to you on a silver platter.

This is a wood sign I made and hung on the fence in the front of my house. I can view it every day. It is a reminder of how i got where I am today and how I can get to where I would like to go. I will continue to make strides to improve my situation until the day I die.

The sing reads, "Dreams Are Ideas Put Into Motion." Without the effort, expecting to change your own well being is a fantasy.
