Tradittional liberalism started some time in the 1800's in Merica. Maybe even earlier but this is when it became a politcal movement and almost word for word same problems to this day. It would eventually splinter in 1900's into the progressives and liberterians that we know and hate today. Some greatest hits of failures we know and love today. Nationalism,racism,sexism,eugenics,interventionism originaly known as empire building. This is how i believe it became so popular. Industry was expanding because of industrial revolution. The country needed to attract citizens out of simple agricultural living around the nation. Even before there was street lights promise of fame and big city lights go figure? They got there just desserts for there troubles. Increased alchol use and another ism to the list, mudered in mass for disobeying there bosses. Double that if you were an immigrant and another splinter. The beginings of multiculuralism vs. The traditionalist that wanted one united Americanism. War with natives for western expansion , war with the spanish for texas , soon to be central America and the panama canal and caribean isles. For yet another nod to the progressives and why i am one. The place the came together was better working conditions for industry,womans suffrage,unionization. By the time the first Rosevelt came around Americans were already war weary. I will give a nod to the liberals for this inspite of there market fetish they insisted on free press and trade not occupiation. The lines get a little murky because of dishenchantment with politics all together. Seems every strategy had failed and informed electorite was an illusive mistress. All the way back then corporate intrest where already astroturfing and co-opting movements. By the time Wilson rolled around it was an Art form . "A war for democracy, A war to end all wars, Don't make me vomit". I had always thought sloganeering wasn't a thing until Edward bearnaise and manufacturing consent. Prooves wealth consolidation is and will continue to be a blight on siociety till we face it head on. So what am i trying to say ?
First it was cool to be fiscally conservative socially liberal, Then the oppisite became domminant. Then we played around with quasi both. The liberals have always been gate keepers hated by all. Then in the modern day they got infultrated by bad actors. They are suppose to stand for let it be economics ,freedom of expression and all its forms,and well defined boarders they are not only failing today but historically. 1880s they sided with oligarchs because that was there relatives. 1900 war mongers and nationalist over progressives. Then intervention and war to open up markets over isolationism. There whole history is back stabbing. From there founding with Mr.jefferson and his radical aggrarian collective.
