MERCANTILISM AND DEGLOBALIZATION (I)steemCreated with Sketch.

It is considered to the mercantilism, the set of ideas that during the centuries XVI and XVII, were in charge to prioritize, above all, the nation-states.

For this, policies were carried out that favored the interests of the country: high taxes to finance the state, prioritization of the national market, restricting imports, favoring monopolies that would strengthen the economy, etc.

With the development of economic science, the improvement of communications and the decline of protectionism, these theories seemed buried in history but-surprise-it seems that the vicissitudes of fate resurrect it.

The world is scared by the ghosts of globalization: the first world is threatened by the cheap labor that competes from Southeast Asia, causing the loss of competitiveness of its products and the consequent increase in unemployment. As a consequence, at the Political reactions are increasingly seen against the upheavals of globalization, angry cries of those who have been excluded by neoliberal globalism.

And as a consequence of this we have populism.

What is populism? If we stick to the historical definition, that political doctrine that prioritizes the interests of the people. That would be very good, if it were true that the people are something homologous and with interests always in agreement, but the reality is something more complex. Populism today, raises its voice against the evils produced by the modern world: a utopia of syrupy coffee, addicted to diversity and hyperintegrating, but that has left behind those who have not been able to adapt in time to the changes of the the globalization.

That is why, across the globe we see new defenses of protectionism and new triumphs of nationalism. Of all these, the best known and renowned is the one that brought to the White House the tycoon Donald Trump, who among his first measures decided undertake a trade war with China.

What does this trade war consist of? In the imposition of tariffs on the Asian country, who had benefited from the low barriers to entering the US market, to squeeze their products there by the millions. jobs, harassed by the low cost with which Chinese labor works.

It is not only a matter of the US, since in Europe, countries like Italy and Hungary, are returning to embrace nationalism while challenging the punitive structures of the European Union. The British, in turn, have voted for the Brexit in a show of intelligence, harming their own interests by separating politically from their main trading partner-and England lives above all on trade.

Thus, we can conclude that the gravediggers of globalization, raging world. Enemies of a project that, for its low acceptance in society, we could consider a failure. In the coming years, could be predicted a weakening of the supranational structures-UN , NATO, etc-, which will lead to an increase in political tensions and a greater tension in the international board.

The world is deglobalizing, protectionism regains its throne and nationalism its crown. The next decades will be interesting at historical level, so they will not be pleasant to live.
