I just turned 51 (today actually). I do remember back in those days of predictions of powerful pocket-sized computers. Everyone thought - Star Trek of course...the speed of the advance is surprising still.
The beautiful thing about Star Trek is a stark contrast to contemporary growth, perhaps. I get the impression that, barring a few major conflicts, their society more or less matured proportionately to the potential of their technology. Even in science fiction, this is a rare thing. Let's hope we master decency, goodness, and especially the drive to be better people when we go to bed than the people we were when we last woke. This is the lynchpin to keeping technology as a dream made reality, rather than our worst nightmare.
