I LEARNT THE HARD WAY WITH HDD 💽
This is a story all about the day I lost all my content from my external HDD.
Hopefully, this post will even just help one person not to make the same mistake I made.
When I was moving my studio around I unplugged my external HDD from the iMac and placed it in a safe place why I moved all of the items and the desk around to make room for some new equipment.
when I went to plug the external drive back in the iMac at first did not pick it up so I unplugged it and replugged it back in a few times until it worked.
I did not use the content on the HDD until that evening and when going to retrieve the files from the HDD they were not there I turned the computer off and back on to see if there was an issue with it picking up the drive again.
Once the iMac rebooted the drive was not picking up again? after about an hour of messing around with it, I tried to recover with a disc doctor program after about 2 days of the program doing a search of about 4TB of hi-res images and some personal files I thought this had solved the problem as the program said it had found all of the content once the content was transferred to a 2nd hard drive I went to use the content and all the files I was trying to use was corrupted.
The files that I did manage to save had been transferred into j.pegs not nef files anymore so they were of no use to me really but I have kept what was good.
I had lost a good few years worth of content and a lot of personal images and files along with a backup from the time machine.
I have no idea why this happened maybe the drive failed at the time or it took a knock when I placed it down I don't have an answer for the losse of data All I do know is that at that point in time a learnt a valuable lesson to keep a backup of your content because at any time the drive can fail............
MAIN DRIVE
BACKUP DRIVE
I do have one explanation posable why the drive failed and that is maybe from the iMac constantly backing up and using the drive as a time machine it burnt out ? but I cant say for sure.............
I would say to anybody always back up the files on a second HDD so you have 2 copies of the content.
DONT LEARN THE HARDWAY ............
I HOPE THIS HAD HELPED ATLEAST EVEN ONE PERSON NOT TO LEARN THE HARDWAY LIKE I DID AND NOT TO MAKE THIS MISTAKE......... REMEMBER TO BACKUP
