Write Freely, Federated & Open Source distraction free blogging with Markdown support

in #technology5 years ago

Write Freely is on the Frontpage of Hacker News right now, I've used it before so I thought I mention it here. It's a pretty neat privacy focused, minimalist and distraction free blogging solution with Markdown support and both light and dark themes that is great for quickly sharing long posts.

You can either host it yourself and federate with other blogs (it's part of the fediverse, supports the ActivityPub protocol), or use the hosted version Write.as and start publishing posts anonymously without an account, you instantly get a link you can share on social networks. Or you can register a free account and optionally publish to read.write.as, which shows posts from the whole community.

You can also publish to Medium & Tumblr, or enable Mastodon (Federated Twitter clone) support so people can follow and interact with your blog right within their Mastodon apps, which is possible because both Write Freely and Mastodon support the ActivityPub protocol.

You can use it in the web browser, but there are also apps available for iOS, Android, Linux, Chrome OS and even a command line client. Third party clients are also supported, so you could write your own if you're a developer.

Write.as has already existed for 4 years according to its developer, Write Freely is the now Open Source software that powers the service.
