Teaming Up on the Documentary

I had never been great with collaboration. When seeing books coauthored or films codirected, I had always wondered how that process worked. How did person 1 respond when person 2 offered an idea clashing with person 1's vision of the project? How would he politely disagree? Were there no hard feelings when one of the two suggestions inevitably won out?

Then I started working on this documentary on Minneapolis homelessness with my cousin Krista. We're open to each others' ideas, gracious when deferring to the other, and frankly, disagreement not being too often. Because with her the editor and me the storyteller, she excels where I don't. And this excellence has allowed this film to evolve in ways better than I had imagined.
