Similar release date, similar poster design, this call for duel of epic proportion!

No I'm not pitting both of these characters in a fictional stage and compare their superpowers. Having watched each movies back to back, I am driven to make some comparison on how each main character is portrayed and how I feel about them.

ALITA

Found on a scrapyard and being rebuilt not knowing who she is. Her past is is in question. She is now set on a journey of discovery to reveal who she really is.

Crystal clear motive of the story.

CAPTAIN MARVEL

Raised from being a little girl struggling with her surroundings and relationships. She got bumped off a gokarting track, fell off on a sandy beach, fell while playing baseball and fell off during a military training exercise, all compiled in a short series of flashbacks.

Not enough time spent on her struggles for me to really sympathize with her struggles and delve deeper into her character and care about it.

ALITA

She questions everything about her surroundings and little by little it brings her to discover about herself too. She asked Hugo about Zalem, about the Centurions, Zapan and everything she sees. It then brought her to discover her special abilities during the Motorball training run in the Iron City.

I now know she is a somebody and wanting to know more.

CAPTAIN MARVEL

Carol Danvers had some flashbacks when she visited the Pancho's Bar. But she is not connecting to it. As if she is not looking at herself. Even after the flashbacks, she still acting like an alien.

She doesn't seem to care about who she was. That's a pity because it might give her character some depth by knowing abit about her past. It is looking as if she does not want to go there and remain being what she already is.

Like destroying a Jukebox with her photon blast, a sign she wants to destroy he past and she hates 90s music. So Noble.

ALITA

Her fight with Grewishka gave her more flashbacks of who she really is. She is a special ops cyborg on a mission to take down the floating city of Zalem and its dark villian, Nova.

A clear purpose and mission!

CAPTAIN MARVEL

Help the Skrull survivors to find the Lightspeed Engine so they can go off and look for others and reunite after being divided by a war with the Kree.

Is not really clear why she wants to do that. Maybe she needs to be off Earth for 30 plus years to be paged back at the end of the Infinity War?

ALITA

Got decimated by the upgraded Grewishka in a rematch but she fought on and saved by Hugo and Dr. Ido. She found another half of her cyborg body in a crashed spaceship during The Fall. She then sports the cyborg body and regain her full potential and ready to take on Nova.

Very nice character arc. I sympathize with it and her rise back to full glory is fully earned and deserved.

CAPTAIN MARVEL

She didn't go through enough struggle to earn her powers. More so that the energy after the blast got absorbed by her but we don't know why she survived the blast. And why she is chosen by the Supreme Intelligence to fly with her resulted in the crash?

Weak or no apparent arc. I didn't share her struggle thus didn't cheer on her final superpower reveal.

CONCLUSION

ALITA

She rise from nothing, discovered her true purpose and mission through the hard lesson of pain and the lost of her loved ones.

Ticked all the box in the Joseph Campbell's, 'The Heroes Journey' list.

She is a revived soldier to resume the mission to take down Nova. The last super cyborg from the highest tech from the last major war 300 years before. A hope for the Iron City to fight oppressions by Zalem.

The movie ended gloriously with Alita pointing her swords up above towards Nova who is high up in Zalem. A perfect beginning of the anticipation for the next one!

CAPTAIN MARVEL

Not enough time spent on her struggles for me to cheer and celebrate her rise to power. There are also questions why she is to the one to get all the superpower. Her mission and motivation towards helping the Skrull is not properly explored.

Maybe being an MCU movie franchise, Captain Marvel have the privilage to expand her character arc in the coming Avengers : End Game and other future movies, as we already saw in the official trailer.

But as a stand alone movie, I struggle to see why she is a "Captain" or a "Noble Warrior Hero". More like a Mary Sue.

p/s : Alita have many reference to classic movies such as her call to Vector is similar to how Brad Pitt call for Hector in the 2004 Troy.
Her battlecry to Nova in the end of the movie is close to the one by Arnold in 1987 Predator.
