Same Sex Marriage Vote Wins in Australia

As I write this, the Australian public has voted with a 60% majority supporting Same Sex Marriage.

No matter my personal opinions, I think this is a good strong result for the Yes campaign there can be no questioning of the validity of the peoples opinion.

I just hope with this result we now see a reduction in the hateful speech that was spread by the Yes campaigners over the past 3 months. The campaign was far from a message of peace, love and tolerance.

I hope to see protections in place for businesses that choose not to support Same Sex Marriage on religious grounds. If I was a devoutly religious photographer, I would hate to be prosecuted if I refused to service a gay marriage due to those beliefs. A business owner has the right to refuse service to anyone, they are the ones turning away the money. I hope protections are going to be put in place for business freedoms.

Congratulations again to the YES campaign on achieving the result that you have desired for many years.

It's 2018, marry whoever you want if it makes you happy. Life's tough, it's also too short to worry about what other ppl do with their lives. I'm not religious, I find religion seperates ppl and causes more problems than good. Just my opinion tho. Everyone smoke weed and chill out 😁

This was a not an obligation to cast ones opinion. It wasn't a referendum.
Likewise, no matter what anyone may say or think, the term marriage is a word embedded in religion, so to use the term "marriage" for same sex couples who choose to give vows to each other is entering into religion, which is outright mixing politics and religion.....

So, no matter what happens, or what anyone says, we shall see a lot of intolerance shown in reference to this topic, especially from those who wish to impose their personal choices upon others under any cost.

I personally, couldn't care less as to who loves who and who wants to be with whom. What I do care about is when people don't care about the consequences their choices have and how their choices affect others.

Law is one thing, religion is another.
Laws should protect religious freedoms and at the same time ensure that both the majority and minority in the community are safe and free. However when laws start getting into religion or vice versa then we have issues.

I need to include a waiver here:
if a "religion" imposes laws that contradict the laws of the State, then that religion is more than just a religion, it is an ideology.
So any religious groups or sects out there that think they have the right to impose their "laws" over Australian people have got the right to buy a one way ticket to a place where they can live in accordance to those foreign laws and morals. Australian law is for all Australians and as long as we keep doing our best to ensure freedom, liberty and The Australian Way, we should be right!

We will see further attacks on conservative Christians. This will result in further erosion of conservative values.

I hope Australia will be a better place for it. It would be great if people just treated others the way they wanted to be treated.well written @ gohba.handcrafts

Well said ! I don't care about same sex marriage but I am against marriage of children, marriage of animals and objects and the introduction of the 126 new genders into the primary school syllabus and you don't have to be a prophet to see this coming.

100% there are only 3 Genders, Male, Female and Hermaphrodite. If you change your sex, good for you but your still either a male or female.
Its kind of like letting your kids choose their own name and they decide they are going to be called Amazon Power Dude instead of Jim.

Great! Everyone deserves to be treated equally under the law. On a similar note, check out my post about a group facing discrimination in the United States that often goes overlooked.

No government should ever "grant" its people the right to marry.
This right belongs to people from their birth.

However, better something than nothing.

Happy for fellow Australians :)

No. There should be no protections for businesses to discriminate against customers on any grounds.

The conservatives always tell themselves that they are the silent majority, so they foisted this colossal waste of money on the country. Now it's been shown, unequivocally, that they are nowhere near a majority - close to 2 to 1 against. So, after the reality check, they are crying out to be allowed to discriminate anyway, because that's what it was always about: putting 'those' people in their place. Not one of 'us'; not as good as 'us'.

I have no problem with a church being able to choose who is part of their congregation, and therefore who they will perform rites for. Secular businesses should have no protections. You don't have to like your job. You don't have to like the people you serve. To treat some customers differently is just unprofessional and if someone has that much of a problem with serving all equally, then, rather than customers being forced to go elsewhere (which may present its own problems outside of major cities), perhaps the service provider should be reconsidering their career. Could you imagine someone working at McDonalds asking for a religious exemption to handling meat? No, you'd say 'find another job.'

Anyone who has a 'religious' problem with gay marriage would be overwhelmingly likely to have that problem because they have a problem with gayness, period. Should we also allow them the 'religious freedom' to turn people away based on sexuality? Race? Past marital status?

No. We should not return to the days of, "We don't serve your kind here."

Very nicely put comment. While I may not 100% agree with everything here, I certainly don't disagree either. On top of that, I appreciate and respect your views.

That is the big thing that was missing from the entire debacle, a lack of respect of opposing views.

That's a pretty myopic view. The vast majority of debate by the major players was reasoned and respectful.

When you have a few million people piling on and being asked to give their opinion, though, of course you're going to get all sorts of extreme views. This was predicted and pretty forcefully argued as a reason to not run the poll.

As inevitably happened, each side seizes, not on the respectful and reasonable arguments of their opponents - there's no media interest in that. Instead, they focus on the extreme elements of the other side and go all snowflake. Why? Because in their minds they're not running an honest assessment of pros and cons of either side: they're running a media circus and a scoreboard.
